Job Description

Position Summary

The Duke University Hospital Cardiothoracic (CT) Surgery Step-Down Unit (SDU) Advanced Practice Provider (APP) provides direct patient care services for complex critically ill Cardiothoracic Surgery and Advanced Heart Failure patients primarily on the SDU as well as other units within Duke University Hospital including the OR, PACU, CTICU, inpatient units, emergency department (ED) and hospital-based clinic settings in collaboration with and under the supervision of the cardiothoracic surgeon(s) and medical director of the CT SDU. The APP performs physical exams, collects and documents data, conducts diagnostic and therapeutic procedures, orders and schedules laboratory studies and professional consultations, prescribes appropriate interventions and medications, coordinates the care and discharge of patients, and provides direct patient care services. The CT Surgery APP contributes to excellence in patient care, research, teaching, and provides leadership to the organization.

Position requirements


PA: Completion of an accredited Physician Assistant (PA) program. A Bachelor's degree required; Master's degree strongly preferred.

NP: Completion of a Nurse Practitioner (NP) program, Acute Care Program preferred.


NP: Current licensure as a Registered Nurse (RN) in the state of North Carolina and approval to practice as a Nurse Practitioner.

PA: Licensure as a Physician Assistant in the state of North Carolina.


PA: National Commission on Certification of PAs (NCCPA) certification is required prior to employment.

NP: National Certification as a Nurse Practitioner is required prior to employment. Certification as an Acute Care or Critical Care NP (preferred) or Family NP/ Adult NP .


PA: Two years of experience as a PA in a relevant clinical area preferred (cardiovascular and/or cardiothoracic surgery)

NP: Two years of experience as a registered nurse and one year of experience as a NP in a relevant clinical area is preferred (cardiovascular and/or cardiothoracic surgery), however will consider a new graduate with prior (cardiovascular and/or cardiothoracic surgery) experience.

Life support:

Basic Life Support (BLS) with American Heart Association (AHA) healthcare provider status

Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS)


APPs primary hours will be rotating 12 hour shifts from 6am-6pm or 6pm-6am covering 7 days per week including holidays. Straight night position APP primary hours will be from 6pm-6am covering 7 days per week including holidays. Schedule may be changed by administrative or clinical leadership to meet department needs.
