About This Position



The University of Miami, Miller School of Medicine's Office of Graduate Studies has an exciting career opportunity for a Director, Programs for the student career services. Reporting to the Executive Director of the Office of Graduate Studies (OGS), the Director of Career Services is responsible for developing and establishing strategic plans, programs, and services to meet the career and professional development needs of the Miller School of Medicine's growing number of biomedical graduate students.


These efforts will include creating and managing an internship program for graduate students, planning the annual Teaching and Learning Workshop, building partnerships with biomedical companies across the globe, facilitating career opportunities for graduate students, taking initiative to design and maintain needful career services, tracking and engaging with alumni, collaborating with faculty to facilitate co-curricular professional development experiences, and developing budgets and proposals that support robust career services activities. The incumbent will be the departmental expert on national trends in biomedical career services and regularly update the faculty. They will be adept at student learning assessment to determine the effectiveness of career services and co-curricular programming.


They will lead important projects and serve on university/departmental committees as needed. The Director should be well-versed with the National Institutes of Health's (NIH) T32 training grant requirements to ensure all co-curricular initiatives and career development activities are in alignment. The incumbent will create strategic plans to enhance the Miller School of Medicine's competitiveness for these grants in areas related to graduate student career services and alumni tracking. They will participate in the development and writing of training grants. The Director will establish beneficial partnerships with constituents across the university such as the Biomedical Graduate Student Government, the Graduate School, Office of Pre-Health Advising and Mentoring, Medical Education, Office of Diversity, Inclusion, and Community Engagement (ODICE), Toppel Career Center, and the Executive Dean for Research's Office of Research Development and Support. On the national level, they will engage with professional organizations such as the AAMC's GREAT (Graduate Education and Teaching) group and NACE (National Association of Colleges and Employers).


The Director will supervise and evaluate a full-time Program Coordinator and student employees such as graduate assistants and office workers. They will routinely provide functional supervision and training to Miller School of Medicine graduate programs staff (internal and external to OGS) to ensure the alignment of all graduate programs' career development activities. They will be responsible for the development of special initiatives and serve as project lead.



Minimum Qualifications



Bachelor's Degree in a biomedical science, basic science, or higher education; a Master's Degree or Ph.D. preferred. Must have at least seven years of relevant experience, preferably in one of the following: an academic career services office or working with training grants, or working in the biomedical field. Knowledge of business and management principles. Ability to direct, manage, implement, and evaluate department operations. Ability to establish department goals, and objectives that support the strategic plan. Ability to effectively plan, delegate and/or supervise the work of others. Ability to lead, motivate, develop, and train others. Any relevant education, certifications and/or work experience may be considered.
