Lockwood, Andrews & Newnam, Inc. rail and transit practice is growing and has several exciting projects in both the Bay area and Los Angeles area and is looking for experienced professionals with a passion for public transportation. Our projects include multi-year Construction Management, Program Management and design for light rail, commuter rail and bus facilities and corridors.

  • Perform professional work including developmental assignments involving the application of standard techniques, procedures, and criteria in carrying out routine engineering tasks with minimal supervision.

  • Perform Engineering calculation and design for Light Rail, commuter rail and BRT facilities.

  • Conduct preliminary engineering evaluations and studies to identify design improvement alternatives, compare options, and making design recommendations as it relates to light rail transit systems, commuter rail transit system, bus transit, including major civil work associated with grade crossings including paving, drainage and associated utilities.

  • Prepare reports, maps, drawings, aerial photographs, perform site visits, and review survey data to plan and assemble construction documents.

  • Perform plan preparation for projects directing project engineers, EIT’s or senior CADD technician.

  • Preparation of quantity estimates.

  • Prepare construction, topographic and boundary survey layouts.

  • Be responsible for project quality on tasks assigned as defined in the Quality Assurance / Quality Control guidelines.


  • Assist with managing projects, starting with development of the initial project design concept, development of a project plan (including identification of staffing requirements and preparation of project schedule)

  • Assist with the execution of project design (management of resources within constraints of project budget and schedule), and culminating with management of bid and construction phase engineering service support.

  • Serve as a project engineer.

  • Independently coordinate the work of engineers, designers/draft persons and sub-consultants throughout the project’s execution.

  • Establish and maintain client relations.

  • Attends client meetings - days or nights.

  • Be involved with marketing, contractual development, and design implementation.

  • Assist with managing the financial aspects of assigned engineering projects; coordinating and adjusting the work effort within the project team to ensure project work is completed on schedule and within allocated budget.

  • Simultaneously manage multiple projects and clients.

  • Use computer-assisted engineering and design software and equipment to prepare engineering and design documents.

  • Responsible for project team quality system tasks as defined in the Quality Assurance / Quality Control guidelines.

  • Visit construction site to monitor progress and other duties per the contract documents.

  • Experience performing civil engineering design for public entities, in particular Transit Agencies and Railroads.

  • Thorough understanding of engineering design and calculations required for the civil engineering, of horizontal and vertical alignment for railroad to include understanding of spirals and super elevation as it relates to railroads.

  • To understand surveying and basic engineering terminology

  • Knowledge and understanding of CADD software platforms (AutoCAD, MicroStation & 3D CADD such as Revit, BIM or Civil 3D a plus)

  • Bachelor's degree in engineering from an accredited four-year college or university

  • California Professional Engineer

  • 10-15 years of experience in the field or a related area

  • Valid driver’s license
