Position Summary

Brief Description of PSU/School/Dept The PSU Center for Student Health and Counseling (SHAC) is a nationally accredited healthcare facility that offers medical, counseling, dental, and health promotion/education services to the students of Portland State University. The center consists of over 100 clinical and administrative staff, and there are currently 20,000 students eligible to use SHAC services. SHAC Counseling Services is committed to helping students flourish in the classroom and beyond. We know that stress and other life circumstances impact students’ abilities to function at their best in the classroom and in their communities. Counseling Services offers a variety of short term mental health services that help students effectively cope with stressors, grow from experiences, find ways to restore balance, build strength, and ultimately increase personal well-being.
Position Summary This is a 12-month position to begin September 3, 2024 through August 29, 2025.

The Social Work Resident, under the supervision of a licensed clinical social worker, provides culturally-competent mental health services to PSU students including: brief individual psychotherapy, group psychotherapy, brief consultation/triage and emergency services. They also participate in psychoeducational outreach and consultation with faculty and staff. The Social Work Resident works collaboratively on an interdisciplinary team of professionals committed to meeting the diverse mental health needs of a global student community. They are an active participant in staff and clinical team meetings, professional development and clinical in-service activities.
Minimum Qualifications
  • Completion of all requirements for a master’s degree including completion of clinical internship by start date of residency.
  • Eligible for, or already registered for, the Clinical Social Work Associate designation with the Board of Licensed Social Workers.
  • Ability, with supervision, to provide a range of clinical services including initial assessment, individual and group therapy, crisis intervention and clinical case management.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Completion of no more than half of the requirements needed to be licensed (supervision/work hours/direct client contact hours).
  • Skills, knowledge and experience relevant to the needs of students of color, students from indigenous communities, LGBTQ+ students, international students, veterans, students from diverse religious affiliations, undocumented students or first generation students.
  • Bilingual or multilingual counseling skills.
  • Experience working in a university or college counseling center.
  • Knowledge of laws and ethics that apply to social workers and demonstrated adherence to those standards.
  • Excellent communication skills (both written and oral) with colleagues and clients.
  • Effective time management skills especially as they pertain to completing record-keeping tasks in a timely, efficient, and effective manner.
  • Ability to work on an interdisciplinary team of health and mental health professionals.

Work Days/Hours M-F, 40 hours/week to be scheduled between 8am and 6pm. Some remote work may be available, however this is subject to change based on operational needs of the clinic and university guidelines.
Total Compensation Range & Benefits Statement PSU has a structured process for determining starting compensation, taking into account years of related experience, applicable skills, knowledge and abilities, market parity, and internal equity. The starting annual salary for this position will be $43,512-$49,680, but may be negotiated above this rate dependent upon the factors above, the budget of the hiring department, and approval from HR.
