Manager - Laboratory at Merz North America Inc

Job Description:

Lab Manager ensures all laboratories operate smoothly, schedules staff, reorder supplies, maintains all security and safety protocols are met by those in the lab.  Responsible for all aspects at the lab, which includes tracking, calibrating, and monitoring equipment, including replenishing, and purchasing supplies.  This includes establishing the necessary documentation associated with prototype builds (e.g. travelers, document sign offs), monitoring as well as mentoring test technicians.  Lab Manager is also responsible for training lab technicians on the correct use of equipment, mentoring engineers and when necessary, discipline lab staff. This includes receiving equipment, components, various materials and/or supplies and placing them into quality hold or quarantine, also filing associated documentation, the handling and disposal of scrap and/or test samples while also keeping the multiple labs generally clean.


Responsibilities




  • Leadership:



    • Lab Manager trains lab technicians on the correct use of equipment and tooling, to conduct tests, documents data, and mentors’ staff to be disciplined.

    • Works closely with members of the R&D Development teams on technical bench work for existing and future R&D products and assisting in root cause analysis of failed units.




  • Lab Management:



    • Responsible for organizing, cleaning, and supporting activities for combined electronics, acoustics, tissue lab and prototype shop/lab activities including cleanliness/appearance.




  • Technician:



    • Set up standard test apparatus and/or build test fixtures, cables, and other circuitry to conduct functional, operational, environmental and life tests to evaluate performance and reliability of devices and/or components.

    • Troubleshoot hardware, software, and configuration issues in prototypes, and test fixtures. Assists assemble, help develop assembly equipment for pre-production according to engineering instructions.




  • Computer/Documentation:



    • Document and receive goods, components and/or equipment into Quarantine to assist with pilot builds including tooling or mechanical fixtures.

    • Maintain accurate documentation per GDP and GMP. This requires a detailed oriented individual with strong organizational and analytical skills, with forward planning abilities, as well as following/establishing/creating necessary documentation and computer skills.




  • Quality related:



    • Must be able to carry out sampling, testing, measuring, recording, and analyzing of test results as part of a scientific team.




  • Other duties as assigned:



    • Establish and maintain all laboratory records in accordance with Merz SOP’s.

    • Ensure supplies are available as required by engineering for lab or product build needs. Recommend measures to improve testing, equipment, or the need for new equipment.

    • Monitor, maintain, analyze, and justify expenses for all labs to function effectively.

    • Document, schedule, and monitor all tooling and equipment calibrations.




Technical & Functional Skills:



  • Prior technical experience with electronics related field in a highly regulated industry (e.g. med device).

  • Ability to assemble and test RF cables such as SMA, N-type and other cable/harness connectors.

  • Demonstrated problem solver as well as ability to identify and show unique and innovative solutions.

  • Excellent troubleshooting skills for digital and analog based electronic circuits.

  • Fine Soldering skills are required for the removal and replacement of electrical components.

  • Having mechanical aptitude, setting up equipment, and/or machine shop experience.

  • Documentation and computer usage for document storage, document creation such as the need for spreadsheets, word documents, work instructions, test plans, semantics etc.

  • Knowledge and experience setting up and operating test equipment, including oscilloscopes, bode analyzer, signal generators, spectrum analyzers, network analyzers and other types of machine shop / prototype machining equipment.


Minimum Qualifications:



  • Minimum of an Associate degree (AA) from an accredited (ABET) community or technical college.

  • 7+ years of related experience working in and facilitating work in an electronics lab, and/or mechanical lab environment with a proven record of success.
