The Director - Viral Antigen Production in Fort Dodge, Iowa is accountable for operational and technical direction in the assigned biologics production area; to insure a safe work place and operational capability through proper selection, training and scheduling of staff and the work force while following company policies and corporate business plans. Operational strategies to implement and maintain compliance status (USDA, OSHA and others as required) within the department are expected.

Additional responsibilities include implementation of projects and strategies to reduce cost of goods and improve existing production processes and representation of the interests of their assigned area to business contacts (customers, suppliers, etc.) inside as well as outside of Elanco. 

1). Direct and manage assigned area in order to manufacture high quality biological products.

2). Assist in coordinating the transfer of new products into Production and in manufacturing qualifying/validation serials.

3). Identify and solve production problems, document findings, and implement solutions; implement LEAN philosophy in department and introduce innovative solutions to problems.

4). Train department leadership in scientific principles, time management, GMPs, technical requirements, and all other policies and regulations governing the production of materials and services in assigned area.

5). Communicate to management progress of the department, problems, employee actions, new ideas, and all other pertinent information

6). Administration of company policies and safety programs

7). Interface with other department managers in a professional manner to coordinate the activities and issues that pertain to their assigned production and/or services. Interface with external resources and contacts to benchmark and improve departmental performance.

8). Prepare annual departmental budget including project resource needs for business plan and monitor departmental expenses and capital projects

9). Complete annual review of all production outlines, special outlines, etc.

Required Capabilities: Technical knowledge of equipment and processes used in viral vaccine production and all biological operations necessary to produce high quality products in a safe manner. Excellent management, verbal and written communication, coaching and teamwork skills. Ability to lead teams to achieve results. Coaching and developing others/Delegation/Growing Talent.

Management & Economic Magnitude:  Leading employees, projects, leaders and businesses/functions.   Responsible for $2-4 million budget, varying capital budget, cost of goods and inventory stocks. 

Direct Reports:  1-5; Total Reports: 10-30

Education/Experience:

• Bachelor’s Degree in Science-based discipline + 8 years of biopharma experience or Master’s Degree in related discipline + 6 years of biopharma experience.  Preferred: PhD + 4 years of relevant experience.
