Job Title: Enterprise Architect - Data and Analytics


This individual works independently and as part of the Enterprise Architecture team, with primary responsibility for technology strategy, data modeling, and implementation planning for the enterprise data warehouse and related analytical data repositories. Day-to-day work includes acting as thought-leader in a data team focused on capturing and transforming diverse source system data into simple, cleansed and consistent data for consumption by a broad audience across Wheels enterprise and Wheels clients, including visual analytics, predictive modeling and historical reporting. As part of the Enterprise Architecture team, this role acts as highest technical expert representing the BI and data domain, and collaboratively contributes to end-to-end technology strategy.


  • Data Modeling and Data Transformation

    • Work with business users and application development teams to understand data consumption use cases for reporting and analysis;

    • Develop reusable and simplified data models appropriate to support common requirements;

    • Identify source system data sources and any necessary rules for transformation, consolidation, merging, cleansing;

  • Develop and maintain strategy, patterns and roadmaps for tools and technology:

    • Maintain roadmap and evaluate updates and patches for current information management toolset (ETL, modeling, database, etc.);

    • Lead the identification, evaluation, selection, and implementation of new third-party tools to enable productive and scalable development

    • Define patterns and create frameworks or reference implementations to guide consistent, best practice usage of current and newly adopted tools;

    • Maintain familiarity with emerging data processing technologies (e.g., IoT and stream processing, unstructured/big data platforms, in memory analytics, etc.) and propose opportunities to enhance current toolset

  • Mentor, Coach and Review work of others in the data team

  • Develop, communicate, and enforce data standards for analytical data creation, modeling, and consumption across IT

  • Interact with application development teams as a Subject Matter Expert:

    • Work with Scrum Masters, Team Leads and Developers to advise on proper definition of analytic data requirements and to identify appropriate use cases for consuming analytic data;

    • Review and approve specific application data design, with consideration to reuse, consistency, encapsulation of logic, etc.;

    • Proactively identify future usage of data

  • Partner with Business Users and Product Management to drive successful adoption and evolution of analytical data sources:

    • Work with authors of Visual Analytics (Qlik, Tableau) solutions to define source data requirements, create data extracts and properly segregate transformation logic between enterprise repositories and analytics apps

    • Collaborate with department and client reporting teams to inform comprehensive and consistent data models

  • Work with the Infrastructure and Operational DBA teams to ensure alignment on:

    • Capacity Planning;

    • Backup and Recovery, and BC/DR strategies

    • Performance Monitoring and Performance Tuning

    • Database platform and other tool upgrades

  • Regular participation in Architecture Review Board discussion


Deep design and implementation expertise including extensive knowledge of most or all of the following:

  • SQL Server databases 2008R2 to current, including performance analysis and tuning;

  • One or more ETL tools (e.g., Informatica, SSIS, iWay, Talend)

  • Data Modeling tools including round-trip engineering (PowerDesigner, ER/Win, etc.)

Strong fundamental knowledge of

  • Both transactional (OLTP) and analytical data (OLAP) modeling patterns;

  • Azure Cloud Services, especially data lakes, stream processing, Azure SQL and Blob storage;

  • One or more Visual Analytics tools, especially data extracts and loads, e.g., QlikSense, Tableau, etc.

  • Layered development design and patterns (UI layer, business logic layer, data access layer etc.);

  • Agile development methodologies and collaboration tools (e.g., JIRA, TFS)

Additional experience and/or technical skill with any of the following are strongly desired:

  • Hadoop and other "Big Data" platforms

  • Source Code Control, Unit Test and Build Automation (Octopus, Maven, Jenkins, Git, Ant/nAnt; msTest, nUnit, jUnit; CruiseControl, Hudson; &c.)

Proven experience designing components for extensibility and re-use, especially application frameworks

Collaboration and knowledge sharing with other architects across concurrent development work streams

Ability to actively participate in and audit artifacts from multiple, concurrent projects

Ability to translate business needs into effective technology designs.

Bachelors Degree in Computer Science or equivalent from four-year college or technical school; or equivalent combination of education and experience.

Minimum 10 years data development experience;

Minimum 5 years working with one or more ETL tools

Minimum 3 years recent experience developing in a predominantly Microsoft environment

Prior experience with product and technology evaluation and selection; build vs. buy
