Position Summary:

Coordinates NP and/or PA services in both a clinical and administrative role, in a hospital, emergency room, or clinic setting.

Position Key Accountabilities:

1. Assists a primary care physician in the diagnostic and therapeutic management of patients by performing a variety of medical or surgical tasks. This includes obtaining personal and medical histories of patients, and performing physical examinations to obtain physical data. Organizes and presents this data, together with evaluations and recommendations, to the physician in such a way as to permit a visualization of the medical problem in order to determine appropriate diagnostic or therapeutic procedure.
2. Performs diagnostic and therapeutic procedures as the physician may assign, provides follow-up and health maintenance care to patients in accordance with protocols established by the physician, and maintains complete and accurate records of contacts with patients either in person or by telephone.
3. Instructs and counsels patients with respect to such subjects as prenatal and postpartum care, physical activity, mental health, rehabilitation, family planning, infant and childcare, diets, medications, etc. May evaluate newborns at high risk for congenital defects secondary to drug abuse, antepartum malnutrition, or other problem pregnancies.
4. Duties may include coordinating volunteer faculty, developing calendar of events for department, and serving on committees to improve quality of patient care and to prepare for accreditation.
5. Coordinates administrative services of Nurse Practitioners and/or Physician Assistants, and handles continuing education functions such as in-services and seminar series.
6. Participates on hospital committees and task forces representing patient or community interests, and plans, develops, and implements a system designed to meet regulatory requirements for all Continuing Medical Education (CME) requirements.
7. Performs all record keeping and report submission required by regulatory agencies and committees.
8. Develops and monitors a section budget.
9. Develops a system to meet all Continuous Quality Improvement requirements.
10. Monitors and supervises the student intern program.
11. Responds to emergency situations.
12. Performs other duties as assigned.

Certification/Skills:

Current Texas Licensure as a Registered Nurse and Current Texas Licensure as an APRN-NP OR
Current Texas Licensure and Certification as a Physician Assistant
Basic Life Support (BLS) Certified or specialty certification as required by department

Minimum Education:

Masters in Nursing as NP or Masters degree in Nursing with completion of a post-masters Nurse Practitioner Certification Program OR Masters degree as PA.

Minimum Experience:

Four years of experience as a Nurse Practitioner or Physician Assistant.

Physical Requirements:

Exerts up to 50 pounds of force occasionally and/or up to 20 pounds frequently and/or up to 10 pounds constantly to move objects.

Security Sensitive:

This job class may contain positions that are security sensitive and thereby subject to the provisions of Texas Education Code § 51.215

Residency Requirement:

Employees must permanently reside and work in the State of Texas.
