POSITION OVERVIEW


The Senior Accountant, Commodity Accounting assists with monthly close tasks and accounting research pertaining to derivative and non-derivative commodity transactions, including physical and financial natural gas, LNG, transport, and storage arrangements. Specific responsibilities include contract review for various originated transactions, drafting of relevant accounting memos and policies, identification and accounting of derivative transactions, and results analysis and inputs validation of complex commodity transactions. This role includes active use of the energy trading and risk management (ETRM) system and interaction with individuals on the trade floor for timely reconciliation between Front-, Mid- and Back-Office. The navigation and maintenance of large data sets and spreadsheets is key for the successful reporting of results and its analysis. Responsibilities include the preparation of various management reports, supporting the preparation of financial statement footnotes and assistance in researching accounting and disclosure requirements for specific commodity transactions.

RESPONSIBILITIES AND ESSENTIAL DUTIES



  • Review the monthly deals report to identify unique or unusual transactions, determine the appropriate accounting treatment and document the conclusions accordingly. Follow-up with traders and other front-office individuals to clarify deal terms and document transactions.

  • Reconcile, analyze and review general ledger accounts in preparation for month end close, to ensure the accuracy, completeness and validity of accounting transactions on the organization’s books and records.

  • Analyze and organize large amounts of data utilizing various Microsoft Excel and ERP system functionalities.

  • Prepare journal entries for complex transactions and review accounting classification pursuant to U.S. GAAP requirements.

  • Ensure successful interface between ENDUR-OpenLink ETRM and Oracle Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) for monthly accounting entries.

  • Perform ad hoc reporting and analysis, summarizing trends, variances, and key metrics for management.

  • Assist with preparation of footnote disclosures and management discussion and analysis for respective SEC registrants and voluntary filers, which will entail effective coordination between Commodity Accounting and Financial Reporting/SEC Reporting. 

  • Monitor changes in accounting developments and regulations related to commodities and derivatives and participate in the implementation of necessary updates.

  • Liaise with other departments and business personnel, along with both internal and external audit, to support information requests. 

  • Monitor, participate in and enhance formal processes for internal controls surrounding the reporting process to ensure compliance with Sarbanes-Oxley Act requirements.

QUALIFICATIONS (EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE AND SKILLS)




  • Education and Certifications:  A bachelor or higher degree in accounting or a related field of study required; Certified Public Accountant (CPA) or active pursuit of a CPA license is preferred.


  • Experience:  Minimum three (3) years of applicable experience, ideally some of those spent in public accounting or a financial reporting role within a public company, preferably with experience in the energy commodities industry.


  • Skills

    • Detail-oriented and highly analytical.

    • Strong knowledge of U.S. GAAP and SEC reporting requirements and awareness of ongoing changes in accounting regulations.

    • Ability to anticipate and surface issues, solve problems and recommend solutions and process improvements, while exercising good business judgement.

    • Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal, with the ability to work with all levels of the Company.

    • Capacity to integrate and balance priorities effectively.

    • Proficiency in Microsoft Office products, including Excel; familiarity with ENDUR-OpenLink ETRM, Oracle ERP and Hyperion a plus.

WORK CONDITIONS



  • Job is performed in a typical office environment, but is subject to time pressures and constraints, and is often dependent on input from others.

  • Occasionally, work may be performed from home, after normal work hours or on weekends.
