Responsibilities



What you'll be challenged to do:

TranSystems’s Schaumburg, IL office seeks a Senior Civil/Transportation Engineer/Railroad Specialist to join our growing office of roadway, highway, structural, transit, rail, and intermodal designers and construction inspectors as a roadway/highway Railroad Specialist on Phase I and Phase II projects.

The person will be a member of our highway division and will lead coordination and inspection tasks as part of a Program Management role.  The successful candidate will lead coordination of various tasks including roadway plan drawings, quantities, geometric design, pavement marking/signing, drainage design, traffic studies, traffic signal design, public involvement, project reports, specifications, cost estimates, roadway lighting, and other related tasks. Candidates with a background in preliminary engineering or development of detailed plans and specifications are recommended.  The individual may also be called on to work closely with other teams on multi-disciplinary projects.  The engineer will have the opportunity to manage and lead challenging projects in a unique and dynamic work environment.

The candidate will manage other engineers and technicians to achieve completion of various tasks, as directed by the team leader and will also complete certain tasks independently. OpenRoads and MS Office and other design software will be used.

 

General Duties & Responsibilities include the following:

 


  • Provides direction to Project Engineers and Staff Engineers as to the general results expected.

  • Provides technical guidance on unusual or complex problems and supervisory approval on proposed plans for projects.

  • Analyzes information and data to perform routine design tasks.

  • Makes decisions independently on engineering problems and methods, and routinely represents the organization in meetings to resolve important questions, and to plan and coordinate work.

  • Responsible for accuracy of engineering design and plans, quality presentation, thoroughness and follow-through, and efficient conformance to budgets, schedules, and company standards.

  • Reviews design options and document findings from the design team.

  • Oversees project database by writing computer programs; entering and backing up data. A good understanding of OpenRoads is preferred.

  • Manages workload and any changes in project schedule or scope or additional services.

  • Maintain professional and technical knowledge by attending educational workshops; reviewing professional publications; establishing personal networks; participating in professional societies.

Qualifications

What you bring to our firm:


  • Minimum 10 years of related, in-field experience, including work directly or as a consultant for the Illinois Tollway, Illinois DOT, Chicago DOT, Cook County Department of Transportation & Highways, local counties and municipalities, and with Federally-funded projects is expected.

  • Candidates must possess strong technical skills, excellent verbal and written communication skills, and the ability to work well in a team environment on multi-disciplinary projects.

  • Previous experience leading projects, railroad coordination and inspection of roadway/railroad work in the field is expected.

  • Previous highway, drainage, construction inspection, track, traffic signal, and/or lighting experience is expected.

  • Individuals will be expected to possess an Illinois PE and an Illinois Driver’s License.

Work Environment:


  • The work environment characteristics and physical demands described here are representative of those an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of this job. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is occasionally exposed to moving mechanical parts and outside weather conditions. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate, however, construction and field assignments can be severe (i.e. Airport noise, inside factories, construction equipment, jack hammers, etc).

  • The employee frequently is required to stand, walk, talk or hear, and drive a car. The employee is occasionally required to reach with hands and arms; climb or balance; and stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl. The employee must regularly lift and/or move up to 10 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 25 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include ability to adjust focus.
