Morrison Foerster LLP, an Am Law 50 law firm with 18 offices worldwide, has an opening for an Associate Director of Portfolio & Program Management within our Information Technology department. This role can be based in any of our U.S. offices! (San Francisco, Palo Alto, Los Angeles, San Diego, Denver, Austin, Boston, New York, Washington, D.C., Miami)

The Opportunity

The Associate Director of Portfolio & Program Management "AD" directs all aspects of multiple and diverse IT portfolio projects across teams and departments. This individual utilizes project management and technical expertise and leadership skills to direct staff, and to resolve issues to ensure project goals, requirements, and deadlines are set and met. The AD takes responsibility for projects involving multiple disciplines in the IT function. On a high level, the AD oversees the day-to-day workflow and progress of projects of the IT department and teams to ensure the timely, efficient and effective progression and completion of tasks and projects and provides updates to CIO. The AD develops process and procedure documentation and identifies and implements process improvements and efficiencies.

  • Work closely with various IT group leaders, the CIO, and other stakeholders to define current and future technology priorities and needs to include day to day demands, on-going projects, or a new technology direction.
  • Recommend information technology strategies, policies, and procedures. Create recommendations by evaluating organizational outcomes, identifying problems, evaluating trends, and anticipating requirements. Build, maintain, and monitor integrated project roadmaps for cross-functional teams.
  • Work closely with various departments, provide oversight for and the management of various IT Programs and Interdepartmental Portfolios and strategic initiatives. Work to ensure adherence to budgets, schedules, scope, and quality control. As necessary, directly engage with and or manage troubleshooting, communication, change controls, and issue resolutions.
  • Outline tasks and clarify specific requirements of projects: In conjunction with Team leaders, review team members' strengths, skill sets, and experience levels to refine task delegation, with a specific focus on members being able to deliver a quality product in the expected timeframe. Coordinate resources and timetables interdepartmentally.
  • Participate in the leadership and direction of the functional teams so that tasks and activities are coordinated for project scope control, quality control, troubleshooting, communication management, change control management, risk management and issue resolution management.
  • Foster a culture of collaboration, accountability, and reliability with regards to the efficient and timely completion of projects.
  • Manage for potential delays due to interdepartmental priorities; realign schedules and expectations as needed.
  • Direct technological research by studying organization goals, strategies, practices, and user projects. Leverage the data and metrics in Service Now to drive continuous improvement.
  • Prioritize and manage project work, lifecycles, milestones, and stakeholder expectations; define success metrics for projects and track performance.
  • Establish and implement project communication plans, providing status updates and reporting to stakeholders and firm leadership.
  • Act as a key point of escalation, providing assistance and guidance throughout the delivery of IT Projects.
  • As necessary, act as a liaison between Firm, customers, and vendors.
  • Ensure compliance with federal, state, local, industry, contractual, and company regulations, standards, specifications, and best practices.
  • Conduct risk assessments; report identified risks to management; provide recommendations for mitigation of risk (including termination of the project, if appropriate). This includes promoting and supporting the firm's security in-depth position.

Ideal Candidate

  • Bachelor's degree in related field, which may include Computer or Information Science, Business, or Engineering required. MS highly desirable.
  • Minimum 10 - 15 years of relevant IT / project management experience.
  • PMP, PgMP, CAPM, and/or comparable project management certifications highly desirable.
  • Law Firm or professional services background preferred.
  • Thorough understanding of project management principles and planning.
  • Comprehensive understanding of information technology procedures and practices.
  • Strong technical and systems knowledge and skills; ability to use technology effectively to create process improvements.
  • Highly organized with attention to detail. Ability to prepare accurate, highly detailed work product.
  • Excellent analytical, logical thinking, and problem-solving skills.
  • High level of business acumen; ability to assess information, anticipate issues and outcomes, and make effective decisions.
  • Possesses a strong ability to work within cross office and departmental teams. Maintains collegial and collaborative relationships and works to build consensus when appropriate.
  • Ability to successfully collaborate with and motivate those in leadership roles and groups of individuals to complete projects in a timely manner, efficiently and effectively.
  • Ability to motivate top performance in matrixed relationships; talent for delivering client service through teamwork.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills; ability to exchange information and to present ideas, report facts and other information clearly and concisely.
  • Proficient with, or able to quickly become proficient with, a range of general and specialized applications, software, and hardware used in the organization and the industry.

Where required by law, salary ranges are stated below. Additional compensation may include a discretionary bonus, overtime as applicable, health/welfare benefits, retirement contributions, paid holidays, and PTO. The range displayed is specifically for positions performed in those cities/states and may vary based on factors including but not limited to the following: local market data and ranges; an applicant's skills and prior relevant experience; and certain degrees, licensing, and certifications.

New York, San Francisco, Palo Alto salary range: $162k to $242k

Los Angeles, San Diego salary range: $150k to $226k

Denver salary range: $141k to $211k
