Position Summary


Reporting to the Chief Development Officer (CDO), the Senior Manager, Development acts as the CDO’s leading resource and chief support, responsible for alignment of cross-departmental processes and priorities, managing project prioritization for the Office of the CDO, and monitoring Board Director and donor relations in partnership with the CDO. The Senior Manager works to support and enforce donor strategies and departmental organization and accountability, overseeing all administrative responsibilities tied to National Audubon Society’s development office. The Senior Manager will supervise the Development Associate and other support positions working in the Office of the CDO. The Senior Manager leads the response to a variety of needs to broaden the scope and effectiveness of the fundraising program and works in collaboration with the CDO to manage relationships with Audubon’s highest-level prospects, donors, and Board Directors.


Compensation:


Salary range based on geo-differentials:


  • $95,000-$110,000/year = National

  • $105,000-$120,000/year = Alaska, CA (not San Francisco), Connecticut, D.C., Chicago, Oyster Bay, NY

  • $115,000-$130,000/year = NYC (not Oyster Bay), San Francisco, Seattle


  • Essential Functions


  • Manage and oversee fundraising plans for the organization’s top prospects in partnership with the CDO, ensuring strategies, projections, and activity is accurately and promptly recorded in Salesforce.

  • Work in collaboration with the CDO and Director, Board Engagement to manage engagement and fundraising plans for Board Directors, tracking all relevant information and next steps and keeping profiles and activities current in Salesforce.

  • Advise on prioritization and tracking follow-up of CDO responsibilities and projects, direct and oversee projects, meeting preparation and follow-up to support the development and execution of donor strategies for the CDO; maintain a “big picture” view of the CDO’s calendar, looking ahead proactively at travel and other opportunities, prioritizing organization and planning.

  • With the assistance of the Development Associate to the CDO, organize, plan and execute development team meetings and additional staff gatherings and workshops as needed.

  • Create and maintain cross-departmental processes with an emphasis on relationship building and team management to enable leadership success, providing organizational oversight on departmental goals in collaboration with the CDO.

  • Work with VP Executive Philanthropic Engagement and others responsible to process gift acknowledgements for donors in the CDO and CEO portfolios, including all Board Directors, and select leadership gifts.

  • Direct and track meeting preparation and next steps between Board Directors and the CDO, CEO and/or other members of Audubon leadership, including timely execution of briefings and other materials.

  • Support the CDO in project managing the Development Committee of the Board of Directors, ensuring timely preparation of materials, minutes, and report outs.

  • Represent the CDO and development department in correspondence with Board Directors, building and maintaining working relationships with individuals, and provide on-call support for members of the Board as it related to their giving to Audubon.

  • Work in collaboration with development leaders to ensure the CDO is appropriately engaged in stewardship of key donors.

  • Work with Direct Reports group members on special projects as determined by the CDO, and manage other special projects assigned by the CDO.

  • Draft correspondence between the CDO, CEO and high-level donors and/or Board Directors.

  • Supervise Development Associate supporting the CDO’s office, and other support staff as directed.


  • Qualifications and Experience


  • Bachelor's Degree and minimum 5 years' professional experience in a development position that includes portfolio management, directly and/or in support of a senior leader focused on principal gifts.

  • Understanding of basic fundraising principals, best practices, and procedures including moves management and effective fundraising pipeline development.

  • Excellent writing, editing, and proofreading skills.

  • Excellent project management, including planning and critical evaluation of an initiative, designing metrics to monitor performance, and motivating a team to achieve goals.

  • Strong interpersonal skills; understanding of person-to-person relationships, and ability to convincingly articulate needs and goals that motivate potential donors to make gifts and existing donors to make bigger gifts.

  • Previous experience managing staff preferred.

  • Interest, understanding, and commitment to the mission of the National Audubon Society, and ability to communicate Audubon’s mission, goals, and programs effectively.

  • Ability to interact with and collaborate with a wide variety of internal and external stakeholders, such as Board members other VIPs and colleagues at all levels of the organization also important.

  • A self-starter who works well independently and as part of a team in a fast-paced and results-oriented environment, can manage multiple projects simultaneously, prioritize workload, and ensure deadlines are met.

  • Ability to maintain confidentiality, while exercising discretion and personal judgment where appropriate.

  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office (specifically Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook) and development database programs required.

  • A flexible approach to work, with the willingness to work some evenings and weekends and travel for events when necessary.
