Job Summary:
The Staff Attorney is responsible for providing legal guidance and support to the Tribal Council and executives, focusing on all Tribal legal and sovereign matters in accordance with the directives of the Executive Director and Tribal Council.
Essential Functions:
Create legal reports, correspondence, and provide ongoing legal guidance to Tribal Council and executives.Develop policies particularly on Health Care issues, Tribal governance, and regulatory affairs while ensuring compliance with Health Care regulations.Manage general litigation and handle legal complaints and inquiries from regulatory agencies, Tribal Members, and the business community.Negotiate, write, and execute various agreements and contracts on behalf of the Tribe.Prepare, review, and negotiate Tribal contracts, requests for proposals, real estate leases, and other legal documents.Provide advice on contract status, legal risks, and liabilities associated with different agreements.Research and anticipate unique legal issues that could impact the Tribe.Review advertising and marketing materials to ensure compliance with legal requirements.Advise on employment matters and provide legal training to the Tribe.Ensure compliance with Tribal, federal, state, and local employment laws and regulations.
Working Conditions and Physical Requirements:
Physical Demands: Sedentary work; primarily involving sitting, with occasional need to walk and stand.Travel Required: Local and in-state travel.
Qualifications:
Education: Juris Doctor (J.D.) degree from an accredited university.Experience: Minimum of five years of legal experience, preferably gained in a law firm and/or corporate in-house setting.Licenses/Certifications: Must be admitted to a recognized bar. Valid Alaska State drivers license, or a Memorandum of Understanding in lieu of a driver's license, as applicable.
Preferred Qualifications:
Experience working with cultural diversities, ANCSA corporations, and Alaska Tribes.
Special Skills:
Excellent analytical, communication, diplomatic, research, and writing skills.Proficiency with Microsoft Suite or ability to train within 90 days.Ability to work independently and collaboratively.Service-oriented, attentive, and respectful in professional interactions.
