The university seeks an accomplished, collaborative, and visionary leader to elevate the university's brand and marketing. The AVP will be bold in their thinking and enhance the convention of traditional higher education marketing campaigns, independently and through the use of a talented in-house team, consultants and vendors. The AVP is responsible for developing these refreshed programs, with a strong emphasis on digital strategy, to connect and engage core audiences with a particular focus on extending the university's footprint with national and global markets.

Reporting to the vice president for public affairs and serving as a member of her leadership staff, the AVP will build a marketing team, launch a global advertising campaign, manage the institution-wide brand, and raise awareness among key audiences and stakeholders about Rice's exceptional reputation and accolades. The AVP will join the Office of Public Affairs, a central team of 35, which serves the university in various critical areas, including news and media relations, creative services, government relations, marketing and digital communications, web development, multicultural community relations, and university relations. This will be a highly visible leadership role which will have collaborative expectations with campus marketers imbedded in individual schools and institutes. The marketing agenda has the full support and prioritization of the board of trustees and office of the president. The vice president, with support of the AVP, will make regular updates to both parties related to marketing and branding growth.

The AVP is responsible for assessing and constructing a marketing operation, data informed assessment and analysis, and end-user feedback to ensure that the social, digital, and other platforms used to connect with Rice audiences are in fact meeting the needs of each constituency. The AVP will oversee a team of roughly a dozen professionals and work closely with the vice president and director of administration to manage contractors, vendors, and related fiscal services and budgets.

As a member of the leadership team, the AVP works closely with colleagues to align efforts with business goals and contribute to the development of a high-performance organization. The AVP will work in a collaborative management environment where thoughts and feedback are encouraged throughout the organization. The AVP will be a leader through influence, not force, and have an eagle-eye for detail and congruency.

A bachelor's degree and eight years of relevant professional experience is required. Experience working in a complex higher education environment is preferred. Direct and substantive experience managing a marketing or brand campaign of significant size and scope is required.

All applications, nominations, and inquiries are invited. Applications should include, as separate documents, a resume and a letter of interest addressing the themes in the leadership profile.
