Duties and Responsibilities:
The Associate Vice President (AVP) for Retention and Student Success will report to the Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs and will be responsible for developing, implementing, and evaluating the strategic student success and retention plan of Bowie State University. This position will have direct supervision and oversight of programs and services that promote, encourage, and support student success with an emphasis on closing the achievement gap for first-generation, low-income, and traditionally underserved populations. The desired candidate will serve as a results-driven strategist and effective change agent working collaboratively with the four colleges and other academic areas to facilitate a university-wide approach to undergraduate student success, to enhance student learning, and to provide a student-centered learning environment.
The AVP for Retention and Student Success will provide supervision, direction, and vision to the following Student Support Services: Academic Advisement Center, Campus Tutoring Center, College Retention Based Coordinators, Career Development Center, Summer Pre-Enrollment Programs, Office of Experiential Learning, Disability Support Services, and Veteran and Military Services. This position requires strong organizational, decision-making, analytical, and management skills. The AVP will use varying styles and approaches that reflect an understanding and acceptance of the role of culture in a diverse, multicultural workplace. The ideal candidate will possess a growth mindset, a strength-based approach centered on students, and a steadfast commitment to equity, especially concerning the elimination of barriers to college and academic success.
Under the direction of the Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs, the AVP for Retention and Student Success will be responsible to perform the essential functions of this position to include:

  • Provide leadership, administrative, and fiscal/budget oversight and policy, procedures, protocol, and process development for retention and student success.
  • Serve as the primary representative to coordinate, implement and assess initiatives related to equity, persistence, retention, completion, and post- graduation success for all students.
  • Manage a coordinated undergraduate student success network to intervene with and assist students at risk of non-completion.
  • Collaborate with other campus units on initiatives related to enrollment management and post-graduation success.
  • Develop, implement, and assess a structured and sustained student success plan that is data-informed and aligned with the mission and vision of the University.
  • Work collaboratively with colleagues in the Divisions of Student Affairs and Enrollment Management to provide a positive, seamless experience for students.
  • Foster an inclusive college community that promotes equity and diversity for all students.
  • Evaluate and infuse appropriate technologies and practices for improved communication with and tracking of students.
  • Exhibit demonstrated success in developing retention strategies that include mentoring programs and other services to address barriers to student retention.

OTHER RESPONSIBILITIES INCLUDE:

  • Develop and maintain effective working relationships with academic deans and instructors to coordinate and ensure appropriate participation by academic units in undergraduate student retention.
  • Participate in conferences, seminars, and training sessions to keep abreast of developments in the area of retention and undergraduate student success.
  • Maintain accessibility to students via email, phone, media platforms or personal conferences.
  • Attend commencement or other ceremonies or programs.
  • Attend departmental, divisional, and college-wide meetings where appropriate or as required by the Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs.
  • Participate in university-wide professional development activities.
  • Recommend new or revised policies and procedures related to student services, student retention, and undergraduate student success.
  • Serve on committees, task forces, and work groups as appropriate.
  • Perform other related duties or special projects as assigned by the Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs.



Education:
  • Doctorate degree.

Experience:
  • Seven (7) years of experience in a management and supervisory role.
  • Seven (7) years of experience in student services.
  • Experience in outcomes assessment and continual improvement of undergraduate student processes.
  • Experience in the development of grant proposals for educational purposes.


Knowledge Skills and Abilities:
  • Exhibit adaptability, including being comfortable with change.
  • Exhibit demonstrated knowledge and skills in data analysis and evidence- based decision-making.
  • Ability to analyze complex issues, manage multiple priorities, and respond proactively in addressing academic issues.
  • Proven excellent organizational, planning, and leadership skills.
