UNDERWRITING PROGRAM
We arehiring high-potential candidates to join our training program as full-time Employees with an anticipated start date inmid-July 2024. Our enhanced five-month training program prepares candidates for a career in Underwriting,handling both personal (auto, home) and commercial (business) lines of business. Our recent graduates reported that the program successfully laid a strong foundation for their future success. Insurance underwriters are "gatekeepers" who ultimately decide which risks Erie Insurance and its Agents should accept and retain. It's a job that is vital to our company's success, and we are excited to now offer consolidated commercial and personal lines training. Our Underwriters are based out of our corporate office in Erie, PA and includes exposure to Senior & Executive Leadershipto network and develop the necessary skills and knowledge to succeed.

WHO SHOULD APPLY?
There is typically no straight path to becoming an underwriter. This program gives interested individuals comprehensive training to successfully prepare them for the role. Candidates should ideally have a college degree; a background in insurance is helpful, but not required.We are seeking a diverse slate of exceptional candidates who have strong decision making, relationship building, communication and research skills.

PROGRAM DETAILS
As a full-time employee, you will complete a five-month Underwriting Training Program designed to give Trainees a bird's eye view of the job. It includes both classroom time and hands-on training with Underwriters. Each Trainee is also assigned a formal mentor to shadow. After the Trainees graduate from the program, they become Underwriters, are integrated into the divisionbased on workload need and will continue to help and shadow current Underwriters. When ready, Trainees receive their assigned territory and Agents with whom they will regularly service.

Position Summary


  • The Hiring rate for this position is $51,512.40/year while in the trainee program. Special consideration may be given in regards to salary for experience in the field.

Participates in an underwriting training program. Learns and performs underwriting/reunderwriting functions within level of authority, which appraise and select risks the company will insure. Reviews Policyholder's records to determine continued acceptability and adequate rates. Matures interpersonal skills to assist with ensuring Agents understand and adhere to company's underwriting philosophy and service to Policyholders.

Duties and Responsibilities

Under the guidance of a mentor or trainer, develops the competency to analyze individual accounts, portfolio experience, and begins to apply product knowledge and acquired skills to perform underwriting tasks. Tasks may include, but are not limited to: reviewing change requests, evaluate audits, inspections and renewal records to verify continued acceptability, rate adequacy, and possible coverage modification within level of authority. Reviews Policyholder files and records to verify original and continued acceptability and ensure adequate rates. Reviews risk and claim reports and determines appropriate actions, including modifying risks or terminating coverage in accordance with level of authority.

Corresponds, develops, and maintains working relationships with Agents, ERIE sales force and other departments through meetings, phone contact and email. Travels to field offices and attends meetings as required to learn to establish rapport with agents and develop knowledge of ERIE's territories.

Under the guidance of a mentor or trainer, demonstrates aptitude for acting as a resource and communicates with Agents and staff on a regular basis to answer questions and discuss risks. Communicates with branch staff regarding Agent issues or concerns. Advises manager of issues or concerns.

Qualifications

Minimum education and experience requirements:

Bachelor's degree required; or

Associates degree and two years related experience required; or

High school diploma, or GED, and four years related experience required; or

High school diploma, or GED, and successful completion of CPCU, CIC or PLCS designation required

Willingness to enroll in and complete the General Insurance Program (INS 21, 22, 23) or related insurance program required.

Working knowledge of spreadsheet, word processing and email software required.
