Job Description:

WTKR/WGNT, The E.W. Scripps station in Norfolk, Virginia is looking for a proven newsroom leader and broadcast journalist to join our team as the Nightside Executive Producer. The Executive Producer will manage our afternoon and evening newscasts, including oversight on story selection, crew logistics, script approval and content production. The ideal candidate knows how to execute multi-platform breaking news and weather coverage. The Executive Producer will also play a significant role in the coaching and training of our newscast producers. WHAT YOU'LL DO:


  • Manage newscasts or local program content and showcasing across multiple platforms.


  • Collaborate with the news team to select stories for coverage consistent with the station’s content strategy.


  • Oversee and edit the writing of content, including but not limited to scripts, promotional copy, teases and web headlines; share ideas about how to present the content in a visually compelling way.


  • Develop and manage effective workflow strategies and procedures for multiple programs.


  • Manage pre-production to ensure quality and ethical standards and coordination between control room and design staff.


  • Provide regular feedback on newscasts with staff, both as a team and individually.


  • Coach producers through development opportunities, including but not limited to how to best showcase content within newscasts, how to perform in a live television control room environment and how to implement the station’s content strategy.  


  • Will work with the leadership team to manage daily content and special event logistics.


  • Will be part of weekend on-call manager rotation.


  • Perform other duties as assigned.


WHAT YOU'LL NEED:


  • BS/BA in related discipline preferred or equivalent years of experience.


  • Generally, 8+- years of experience in related field preferred.


  • Generally, 5+ years previous news producing experience preferred.


  • Prior managerial experience preferred.


WHAT YOU'LL BRING:


  • Knowledge and demonstration of editorial judgment, journalistic ethics and libel laws.


  • Ability to create tactics and strategies to increase demo performance in key target areas for multiple platforms.


  • Working knowledge of federal, state and local laws impacting operations.


  • Proficiency with live news production & broad understanding of newsroom operations and equipment.



  • Solid understanding and demonstration of multimedia file formats and strong computer skills, including Microsoft Office


  • Proven ability to manage multiple tasks and deadlines in a fast-paced environment


  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills; excellent interpersonal skills and a positive attitude


  • Ability to foster creativity, generate new ideas and implement innovative ideas across all platforms.
