Schnabel Engineering is seeking a Sr Associate Tunnel Engineer, with a background in geotechnical and/or structural engineering, to support our growing Tunnel Business Unit.  We are looking for a motivated professional with attention to detail, a passion to continue to develop, and a desire to be part of a strong growing team.  Candidates will support business development, project management, and staff management for tunnel design, investigation, and construction management projects. Candidates will support the technical design work on our tunnel projects as well as manages BD initiatives for the tunnel group.

Remote work from home or at one of Schnabel’s office locations is permitted for this position.

Job Responsibilities:


  • Research, identify, and track leads for new business opportunities.

  • Attend conferences and industry functions for the purpose of building client and team relationships and representing the business unit.

  • Lead the planning, management and execution efforts of tunnel and underground design projects.

  • Collaborate with and lead multidiscipline and multi-location internal and external teams through the tunnel design process

  • Perform and/or provide supervision of conventional geotechnical and tunnel structural design analyses.

  • Manage development of designs for tunnels, shafts, excavation support, and other underground facilities including preparation of calculations and design reports, plans, specifications, reports, and other project contract document.

  • Manage large projects and technical teams on select strategic opportunities.

  • Work with team to develop strategic approach for technical proposals, statements of qualifications (SOQs), and letters of interest.

  • Understand and communicate the value proposition of Schnabel Tunnel business unit while understanding business intelligence and our competitive advantages.

  • Responsible for managing projects including scope, schedule, budget, and client relations.

  • Other related job responsibilities in alignment of overall Tunnel business goals and objectives.


  • Ability to work effectively with leadership and business development teams as well as a wide variety of technical staff.

  • Strong written and verbal communication skills. This position often communicates with technical professionals and teaming partners, both internal and external, and will represent the organization at industry events.

  • Strong organizational skills, attention to detail, and ability to plan and manage multiple tasks.

  • Strategic market management and business planning tools that support continued growth.

  • Desire to proactively engage with potential clients to drive change and assist in solving problems while thinking “out of the box” to identify how to create sustainable value.

Qualifications:


  • Bachelor's Degree in Civil, Geotechnical, or Structural Engineering from an ABET accredited school of engineering (Master’s Degree highly preferred).

  • Licensed Professional Engineer and ability to extend licensure to other US states through reciprocity.

  • Minimum of 15 years tunnel engineering experience with a strong project management background and significant practical experience on tunnel and underground construction projects. 

  • Excellent interpersonal, written, and verbal communication skills

  • Working knowledge of AutoCAD MathCAD, STAAD, SAP, RISA, RSA, GeoStudio, Plaxis, FLAC, and Revit software are pluses, but not required.

  • Periodic travel for projects, conferences, meetings, and other responsibilities is required and anticipated to be up to 20%

  • Ability to work on active or potential construction sites including site work that may involve work in underground spaces, above slopes and shafts, over rough terrain, and in remote locations.
