Job Description

Basic Purpose

Positions in this job family are assigned responsibilities involving law enforcement duties at a state agency, institution or facility. This will include conducting patrols in an assigned area or location to enforce laws and rules and provide protection for individuals and property within the assigned area of responsibility.

Typical Functions

Patrols an assigned area or location to eliminate hazards, vandalism or other criminal activity; provides protection for individuals and property within the area of responsibility; may carry firearms and be required to use force to enforce security, apprehend suspects, or protect lives.

Directs police, fire and other emergency vehicles; provides assistance to authorities in the handling or investigation of traffic accidents, fires, vandalism, and other emergency situations and incidents.

Greets visitors; answers inquiries; receives and relays messages concerning both business and personal matters.

Provides supervision or direction to an assigned staff; prepares and maintains necessary records and reports.

•

Plans and directs law enforcement programs; coordinates law enforcement activities within assigned areas of responsibility.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities required at this level include knowledge of routine police and security practices. Ability is required to follow oral and written instructions; to give clear and concise directions; to make oral and written reports; to establish and maintain effective working relationships with others; and to effectively evaluate emergency situations.
