Marine Surveyor at Garmin International

Job Description:

We are seeking a full-time Marine Surveyor. In this role, you will be responsible for serving as captain of the boat while managing collection, monitoring, analysis and interpretation of marine survey data for US bodies of water using bathymetric survey equipment. Candidates will need to be able to travel up to 50% of the time within the inland U.S. on two-week rotations.

Responsibilities

Essential Functions


  • Independently navigate boat to bodies of water across the United States, including manmade reservoirs, natural lakes and some river systems, for surveying and collecting, analyzing, and interpreting data using bathymetric survey equipment up to 1,000 acres daily

  • Monitor, analyze, evaluate, and backup data as it is collected adjusting equipment as necessary to meet data quality requirements

  • Ensure the safe and efficient transportation and operation of a small survey craft tasked with the collection of bathymetric survey information 

  • Perform or supervise regular inspection and maintenance tasks on equipment in the field

  • Monitor the working environment and actions of all crew members while working in the field to ensure their safety and to protect field equipment with a value in excess of $150,000

  • Independently perform processing on the collected data to remove incorrect or undesirable results and to produce a comprehensive and accurate model of the bathymetry

  • Participate in planning efforts prior to arrival of survey crews in a particular area

  • Ensure the cartographic model produced meets quality standards and maintain required records and logs as dictated by Garmin procedures

  • Serve as Garmin ambassador and regularly interface with customers, dealers, marina operators, etc. and travel for consecutive weeks not within a set schedule

  • Provide feedback to management on the effectiveness and efficiency of survey techniques

  • Understand and comply with all applicable Federal, State, and local regulations and ensure they are followed including Department of Transportation (DOT) driver regulations/requirements under the federal Motor Carrier Act

Qualifications

Basic Qualifications


  • Bachelor’s Degree OR effective completion of a minimum of 100 surveys as an analyst or captain with the Garmin Marine Survey team

  • Must obtain Department of Transportation (DOT) certification and receive Commercial Motor Vehicle Certification as well as drive and adhere to DOT regulations

  • Possess previous work experience in the operation and maintenance of pumps, generators, engines, marine electronics, tow vehicles, and trailers

  • Demonstrate understanding of mechanical and electrical systems commonly found on boats up to 30 feet in length and must possess demonstrated troubleshooting skills

  • Demonstrate advanced ability in the operation and trailering of boats up to 30 feet in length

  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office software (Outlook, Word, Excel)

  • Possess a demonstrated ability and/or previous experience working in the field including reliability, dependability and proactively working without direct supervision

  • Ability to bend, twist and lift up to 55 pounds while using safe lifting techniques
