Physician Assistant - General Surgery, including Vascular and Thoracic Surgery Job Responsibilities: This positon will be part of a team, comprised mostly of Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center residents that support the general, vascular, and thoracic surgical services' care for patients during all phases of hospitalization. Responsibilities include working under the supervision of physicians in the Department of Surgery to provide inpatient care, as well as responding to emergency situations, adhering to standards of practice and established procedures. This position requires the following: rounding with the team of residents in the morning; ordering diagnostic tests; interpreting test results and imaging studies; placing physician consults and communicating directly with them; formulating diagnosis and treatment plans under the direction of the chief resident and attending surgeons; prescribing and at times administering medications; performing complex wound care; counseling patients and their families; completing discharge documentation, including coordination of care with nurses, physical therapists, and case managers. Other duties may include: first assisting in the operating room; seeing patients in the emergency room and performing complete history and physicals for consults or admissions to the service; assisting attending physicians with post-operative orders; providing support to PA and/or medical students. The physician assistant may be involved with a patient's medical care in any role which the supervising physician deems proper and consistent with applicable law, hospital regulations, delineation of privileges and the physician assistant's training knowledge, skill and experience.





*Minimum of a Bachelor's degree. Must also be a graduate of a Physician Assistant Program approved by the American Medical Association.

*Must be licensed as a Physician Assistant in Massachusetts.

*A certificate issued by the National Commission on Certification of Physician Assistants (NCCPA), may be required for certain departments.

*If prescribing medications is included in clinical duties and privileges, Massachusetts Controlled Substances Registration and federal DEA Controlled Substance Registration are required.

*1-2 years prior experience in a similar health care or inpatient hospital setting preferred, although new graduates will be considered.

*Expert clinical judgment to function in an independent role.

*Excellent interpersonal and communication skills in order to collaborate with patients, families, physicians, staff, and community health workers.

*Ability to be self-directive and demonstrate initiative in addressing responsibilities of the position.

*Ability to comprehend and communicate complex verbal and written information in English to medical center staff, patients, families and external customers.

*Ability to utilize appropriate problem solving and conflict resolution skills.

*Must be able to maintain strict protocols of all confidential or sensitive information
