Job Description:

General Overview



The Medical Assistant works as part of the healthcare team by assisting in the examination and treatment of patients under the direction of physician or advanced practitioner and by performing various administrative tasks to ensure a smooth patient work flow within the practice.



Principle Duties and Responsibilities



Medical Assistant:


  • Coordinates pre-visit preparations including addressing the special needs of patients (i.e. comfort measures, communication, and other appropriate issues), ensuring relevant labs and tests are scheduled and completed prior to office visit, organization of paper chart, etc.

  • Escorts patients to the exam rooms and take vital signs.

  • Performs a variety of patient care procedures within the Medical Assistant (MA) scope of practice, including but not limited to: injections and EKG's.

  • Obtains blood specimens in accordance with established procedures, while maintaining a professional, patient-sensitive atmosphere.

  • Provides assistance to providers with office procedures.

  • Prepares requisitions and submits specimens to the laboratory.

  • Sends in electronic prescriptions for patients that have been instructed by providers.

  • Communicates with patients regarding laboratory, imaging results and prescription instructions per practice protocol.

  • Cleans and restocks exam rooms.

  • Maintains the strictest confidentiality of any and all patient records including but not limited to treatment, diagnosis, history, medication, and financial status.




In peak times, the Medical Assistant may be required to function as a Medical Secretary.



Medical Secretary:


  • Answers all incoming telephone calls and routes to the appropriate person. Takes clear messages for providers and other office staff. Handles routine requests for information. Ensures that all emergent messages are handled with priority per practice protocol.

  • Greets, directs patients and answers all questions in a courteous and helpful manner within the scope of responsibility.

  • Schedules patient appointments and collects pre-registration information at the time of scheduling. Verifies health insurance coverage and demographic information. Collects co-payments and issues receipts.

  • Maintains current managed care information. Process referrals. Obtains required authorizations, eligibility verification and confirmation of registration information. Enters referral information into computer database.

  • Sends in electronic prescriptions for patients that have been instructed by providers.

  • Maintains providers' schedules.

  • Obtains signatures for all forms including assignment of benefits, notice of privacy, insurance waivers and authorization forms.

  • Receives and distributes all mail per practice protocol.

Performs all other duties and tasks requested to ensure the efficient overall performance of the practice.



Qualifications

Education and Experience:



  • High school diploma or GED required.

  • Graduate of an accredited Medical Assistant training program is strongly preferred.

  • Certification as a Medical Assistant through American Association of Medical Assistants (AAMA), or another national accredited certifying body is preferred. Certification will be required within six months of hire.

  • Phlebotomy certification preferred.

  • Experience in a community-based medical practice required.

  • Prior experience with Epic required.




Knowledge/Skills/Abilities:



  • Knowledge of physician policies and procedure including general knowledge of medical terminology.

  • Ability to read and interpret documents including patient charts and insurance forms.

  • Must be able to make fast educated decisions in emergency situations.

  • Excellent interpersonal skills.

  • Ability to communicate effectively verbally, over the phone, electronically, in-person, as well as in writing.

  • Knowledge of safety hazards and precautions to establish a safe work environment.

  • Strong computer and typing skills, with previous electronic scheduling and electronic medical record system preferred.

  • Ability to prioritize work and respond to changing needs.
