The Impact You’ll Make in this Role

As a Portfolio Manager Fixed Income, you will have the opportunity to tap into your curiosity and collaborate with the investment team. Here, you will make an impact by:


  • Providing overall management and strategy for fixed income retirement investments across all plans managed by 3M including portfolios in USD, CAD and GBP.

  • Managing derivative portfolios designed to hedge duration and inflation risks across key countries including establishing liability hedge strategy and objectives, managing collateral and liquidity, with attention to duration, curve and spread risks.

  • Providing critical input to department investment committee process and 3M Investment Management Corporation (IMC) Board reviews across the entire portfolio and lead Matching fixed income related strategy and discussion.

  • Developing fixed income focused team and resources to be able to effectively manage portfolios and risks.

  • Source, diligence, negotiate and implement new investment opportunities in growth fixed income across fixed income sectors, geographies and asset classes including high yield, emerging market debt and other fixed income sectors.

  • Managing key strategic relationships with investment management firms, monitoring investment results and hiring, retaining and terminating investment managers as appropriate.

  • Conducting independent research on macroeconomic trends, monetary policy, fixed income market conditions and other factors that will affect strategy and portfolios and sharing key insights with management and broader team.

Your Skills and Expertise 

To set you up for success in this role from day one, 3M is looking for candidates who must have the following qualifications:


  • Bachelor’s degree or higher (completed and verified prior to start) from an accredited institution

  • Ten (10) years of fixed income portfolio management experience including experience trading and/or managing derivative positions

Additional qualifications that could help you succeed even further in this role include:


  • CFA and/or MBA highly desirable.

  • Experience serving on investment committees and presenting to investment committees and boards.

  • Experience analyzing individual credits and portfolio credit risks.

  • General problem solving, financial modeling and analytical skills, including the ability to understand complex investment concepts.

  • Experience using portfolio management systems and tools.

  • Demonstrated management and leadership skills.

  • Strong written and oral communication skills.

  • High degree of professionalism and integrity.

  • Strong fundamental understanding of economic concepts, financial markets, economic and monetary policies, asset allocation and investment theory.

  • Proven ability to work independently, in an unstructured environment, under uncertainty.

Travel: May include up to 10% domestic/international

Relocation Assistance: May be authorized
