Job Description:

The On-Call Substitute will assist teaching staff in the planning and facilitating developmentally appropriate activities for the classroom including mealtime, outdoor play, field trips as well as any other center activities and/or duties. These activities require adult monitoring and assisting children.


  • Assist with activities in the classroom including observing, talking, sitting, standing, walking and eating with the children “family style”.

  • Supervise children in their acquisition of self-help skills (e.g. dressing, toileting, washing hands etc.).

  • Assuring the health and safety of the children at all times.

  • Plan activities which include objectives, materials, methods and evaluations, which are appropriate to the ages, size of the group, and the abilities of the children and to carry these through to completion.

  • Utilize classroom management techniques which establish a positive environment conductive to learning.

  • Utilize teaching aide in planning learning experiences for young children.

  • Assume responsibility and perform as a helpful person in the classroom

  • Demonstrate a professional attitude toward teaching obligations and responsibilities.

  • Evaluate and analyze his/her performance and progress with professional associates; being a positive member of the Child Care Center’s team.

  • Other duties as assigned or determined by the program needs.


  • Must be at least 21 years of age and have a high school diploma or GED and a minimum of a 3 credit course in Early Childhood Education or related field.

  • Must be willing to take necessary trainings/courses to achieve EEC Teacher certificate for appropriate age group, CDA, AA or higher degree in Early Childhood Preferred.

  • Must have the ability to express one self, reading, and writing in English (bilingual English/Spanish) is beneficial.

  • Must be able to work varied hours to cover the needs of the program and be a reliable and positive team player.

  • Must be able to participate in classroom housekeeping duties in all areas, able to use bleach/cleaning solutions for sanitization purposes, be capable of hearing and seeing the children to monitor their health and safety, meet the physical demands of an active learning environment which include, but are not limited to bending, standing for 30 minute intervals and ability to get up and down.

  • Must comprehend/communicate in English both verbally and in writing, and have basic computer literacy skills.

  • Must show documented proof of current physical exam, negative TB test, proof of MMR immunity and valid First Aid & CPR certification. (Hepatitis B Immunity is advisable.)

  • Written references

  • Must have a suitable CORI, SORI & DCF background check on file prior to employment.

  • Must have a suitable fingerprint check completed within the first thirty (30) days of employment
