Job Description:

PURPOSE OF YOUR JOB DESCRIPTION:
Pharmacy technicians assist pharmacists in preparing and distributing drugs, maintaining the drug inventory and maintenance of records. Pharmacy technicians work only under the supervision of a registered pharmacist in accordance with Massachusetts regulation. They do not perform duties that can legally be performed only by a registered pharmacist.


DELEGATION OF AUTHORITY:
This position has been delegated to a licensed pharmacist who has the authority, responsibility and accountability necessary for carrying out assigned duties.

PERFORMANCE REQUIREMENT / DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
I. Principle Duties/Responsibilities
Leadership Responsibilities/Oversight
Management and Oversight of Technician Reports
Oversight of Inventory Management including outdates
Ongoing communication with Lead Pharmacy Technician regarding issues associated with Operations, Distribution, Medication Safety and Regulatory Compliance
Management and Oversight Regulatory Compliance as it relates to Unit Inspections/Floor Stock
Active participation at pharmacy technician-related meetings (in-house), educational seminars, and training opportunities.


A. Procures and distributes drug orders per physician request, pharmacist request or prearranged work assignment according to established policies, procedures and protocols, and within specified time frame.
Identifies and fills replacement medications on emergency crash carts, OR carts and floor stock accurately.
Prepares sterile products (including chemotherapy and parenteral nutrition) accurately.
Delivers medications and supplies to patient care and ancillary areas accurately.
Is skilled in all technical areas of automated dispensing including, but not limited to reporting, outdating, restocking, defrosting (SMART-REMOTE), PAR levels, assigning PARs-Users-Stock.


B. Maintains adequate stock of medications and supplies according to established policies, procedures and protocols and within specified time frames.
Assists in ordering, receiving, unpacking and storing pharmaceuticals and supplies in appropriate locations.
Rotates stock to ensure use before expiration date.
Identifies and replaces outdated and unusable drugs.
Restocks medication and IV dispensing areas.
Prepackages medications in unit-of-use containers.


C. Contributes to the effective operation of the department.
Maintains the regulations and expectations of US 797/800, including, but not limited to, sterile compounding and sterile compounding area standard operating procedures.


Picks up orders, requisitions and medications for return from patient care areas when on delivery rounds.
Enters medication orders into pharmacy computer system accurately.
Enters charges and credits for patient medications accurately.
Generates reports, pick lists and labels as required.
Answers the telephone, identifying self and department. Directs calls to appropriate personnel.
Answers requests at the window and makes STAT deliveries to patient care areas when requested.
Organizes and prioritizes work assignments.
Maintains logs, records and other required documentation accurately. Files in appropriate locations.
Demonstrates good verbal and written communication.
Keeps pharmacy areas clean, neat and well-organized. Keeps pharmacy equipment clean.
Completes all assigned medication storage area inspections in a timely manner.
Conducts quality monitors, collects data and completes documentation, as assigned.
Attends staff meetings. Participates in orientation, education and training programs. Reviews literature and other materials as assigned.
Completes all competency/skills assessment requirements (see attached competency assessment/skills list).


D. Performs other duties as assigned by supervisor.


II. DEPARTMENTAL STANDARDS
Is punctual and dependable; reports to work as scheduled. Absenteeism and tardiness are within policy guidelines.
Maintains a neat, professional, well-groomed appearance. Observes pharmacy uniform dress code. Wears identification badge.
Performs work within specified time frames. Adapts positively to frequent interruptions and changes in workload and/or work schedule.
Provides courteous, cooperative and timely service to patients, visitors and staff. Demonstrates good verbal and written communication.
Works cooperatively with hospital and pharmacy staff. Voices concerns and suggestions to appropriate persons in a positive manner.
Demonstrates sound professional judgment consistent with clinical/academic background.
Maintains strict confidentiality of patient, guest and employee information.
Fosters a team environment by providing orientation and training to new team members. Assists co-workers in tasks, as time permits.
Adheres to hospital and departmental policies and procedures. Complies with all requirements related to risk management, safety, security, fire and infection control. Complies with all applicable Federal and State laws, rules and regulations. Performs all duties under the direct supervision of a registered pharmacist.


III. ORGANIZATIONAL STANDARDS

Qualifications

EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS:
• High school diploma or equivalent. College courses desirable but not required.


EXPERIENCE:
• Pharmacy technician experience required.
• Current MA Technician licensure required.
• National Pharmacy Technician Certification required. (or in process)
