Job Description:

The Undergraduate Co-op Research Assistant supports the execution of research protocols mostly focused on the physiological traits of obstructive sleep apnea. All responsibilities of the Undergraduate Co-op Research Assistant are carried out under the specific direction and supervision of the Project Manager and CIT-IIs. Duties include (but are not limited to): setting up instruments and equipment for overnight research studies, setting up research subjects for polysomnographic (PSG) recordings, monitoring subjects and equipment throughout study, help with recruiting research subjects, as well as all other duties assigned. The qualified candidate will receive training in PSG setup, troubleshooting, and scoring.


PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:


1. Assists with major experimental protocols involving the setup of research participants, monitoring of recording equipment, and management of experimental conditions (preparing the lab for a study, monitoring the study overnight, and cleanup).


2. Prepares and applies electrodes for sleep polysomnographic recordings according to standard procedures.


3. Assists in collecting data. Monitors data collection equipment, including subject testing computers and PSG collection systems.


4. Identifies different stages of sleep. Troubleshoots technical problems that occur throughout the study.


5. Follows universal/standard precautions and maintains clean and safe work and subject areas, reports unsafe work areas to appropriate personnel.


6. Maintains the safety and well being of the experimental subjects at all times.


7. Demonstrates professionalism and respect for subject rights and individual needs.


8. Collaborates with other CCI staff members to more effectively organize work to get all research events completed as scheduled.


9. Assists with the recruitment of research subjects using medical databases. Screens subjects with a phone interview.


10. Performs all other laboratory duties and projects as assigned.



Qualifications

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • College undergraduate required. Prefer individuals with science or patient-care background and interest in scientific research.


  • SKILLS/ ABILITIES/ COMPETENCIES REQUIRED:


    1. High level of technical knowledge, communication and reasoning skills.


    2. Able to function appropriately and with limited supervision under sometimes stressful conditions. Initiative and sound judgment are displayed in unexpected situations.


    3. Good interpersonal skills, able to maintain positive working relationships with co-workers and to work cooperatively with peers, able to perform his/her role in a team effort.


    4. Physically able to assist with the moving of testing equipment.


    5. Good organizational skills and ability to prioritize and manage time efficiently.


    6. Ability to follow directions carefully, and once trained, to work with a minimum of direct supervision.


    7. Accepts additional work when required.


    8. Must possess the ability to continually learn new technical skills and update existing skills.


    WORKING CONDITIONS:


    Overnights will be required. Busy laboratory environment. Occasional intense periods of work can be associated with particular scientific deadlines. Potential exposure to blood-borne diseases through contact with biological specimens.
