Job Description:

The Research Technologist in the Breyne laboratory in Building 149 is a full-time position under the direct supervision of the PI. This Technologist independently carries out a broad range of technically advanced research activities and procedures; evaluates conclusions and has considerable latitude to modify or devise methods and techniques as necessary to achieve desired results. Must be able to write up results for publication, and prepare images for talks given by the PI. Experience in molecular biologic methods, DNA/RNA sequence analysis, and cell culture is required.


PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:




  • Directs and carries out experiments independently on projects with collaborators with the advice of the PIs.

  • Trains and provides ongoing guidance for technicians and students in the use of laboratory equipment.

  • Generates and maintains a book of laboratory protocols for lab use.

  • Independently performs molecular biology experiments, including: molecular cloning, CRISPR experiments, isolation of DNA and RNA from cells, blood or tissue, evaluation of RNA quality using the Bioanalyzer; quantification of DNA qualify/quantity using the Nanodrop; primer design; RT-qPCR amplification of genes and variants; preparation of PCR samples for NGS sequencing; analysis of sequence for variants/mutations and assessment of functionality of variants using various databases/resources; cell culture; nanoparticle tracking analysis; EV isolation; size exclusion chromatography; cell transfections and transductions; lentivirus vector preparation; bioluminescent assays; fluorescent microscopy; protein quantification; restriction digests of DNA; EV uptake assays; immunocytochemistry; western blots.

  • Participates in the design and modification of research protocols and experimental design.

  • Develops research methodologies within the parameters of experimental protocols and research objectives.

  • Responsible for oversight and coordination of scheduling of experimental procedures.

  • Orients and trains new research technicians as needed.

  • Responsible for troubleshooting problems and instructing others in highly specialized techniques.

  • May develop modifications of existing assay techniques, experimental protocols, or new procedures.

  • Synthesizes and interprets results.

  • Performs data analysis using statistical techniques as needed.

  • Prepares written and/or verbal status reports as needed, including help in writing of papers and preparation of images for talks.

  • Composes and may present sections of research reports and manuscripts as needed.

  • Maintain records in accordance with strict laboratory practice guidelines.

  • Responsible for lab organization and monitoring of all equipment.

  • Expertise in computer programs used by the lab.

  • Responsible for NTA core.

  • Provides administrational support for the lab.






Qualifications

SKILLS & COMPETENCIES REQUIRED:




  • Ability to make independent, effective decisions and troubleshoot instruments.

  • Demonstrated competence in advanced research techniques and methodologies.

  • Strong organizational and communication skills.

  • Strong database management and overall computer skills.

  • Demonstrated analytical skills to problem-solve effectively.

  • Functions with speed, precision, and an understanding of the theory behind tests and procedures.



EDUCATION:


Bachelor's Degree required.


EXPERIENCE:


Required: Minimum of 3+ years of directly related and progressively more responsible experience.


FISCAL RESPONSIBILITY:


Will order all supplies and equipment and may monitor budget for research supplies.


WORKING CONDITIONS:


Duties will be performed in a research laboratory.
