Job Description:

GENERAL SUMMARY/ OVERVIEW STATEMENT:


The main responsibility of the Science Writer will be to assist with the scientific writing of peer reviewed publications and grant applications. Grant applications will be written for grants from the NIH, private foundations, and industry. Experience in writing grant applications is preferred.


This position will entail assisting with the preparation of manuscripts for publication including revising papers for resubmission. The successful candidate will work closely with the Chief of Thoracic Surgery and the Thoracic Surgery faculty to provide appropriate prioritization and timelines for the writing projects.


PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:



Editing, Formatting Revision and Style: Provides content editing, formatting, and revision of grant proposals, manuscripts, abstracts and posters for submission to grant funders, scientific organizations and other professional groups. Revises text using consistent stylistic format to ensure clarity, cohesion, and flow of material.



Project Planning: Assists researchers in research project planning to facilitate research concept and hypothesis development, and in the preparation of the scientific and technical components of research proposals to enable detailed protocol development.



Meeting Attendance: Attends meetings with investigators to gain insights into project requirements.



Grant Proposals: Assists in the preparation of grant related documents such as resource and facilities overviews, bibliographies, concept papers, regulatory paperwork, papers and presentations. Works closely with Principal Investigator(s) to develop, present, and bring to final submission high quality, large, multi-disciplinary, and multi-collaborative grant proposals.



Project Management: Delivers on multiple projects and initiatives simultaneously, meeting deadlines, quality measures and budgets. Helps maintain project management database for the team, including inputting projects, notes, deadlines and deliverables.



Funding: Assists in tracking, identifying and obtaining potential sources of funding and match appropriate investigators as they are announced to enable financial support of research.


SKILLS & COMPETENCIES REQUIRED:

  • Excellent written and verbal communication.

  • Excellent administrative, organizational, communication, writing, and analytical skills.

  • Excellent interpersonal and negotiation skills. Ability to work independently.

  • Excellent computer skills (Microsoft Word, PowerPoint, Excel).

  • Flexibility and demonstrated competence to assess priorities, manage a variety of activities in a complex and fast-paced environment, and ability to meet deadlines with attention to detail and quality.

  • Familiarity with the NIH grant formats and the forms of grant submissions.

  • Experience in the preparation of manuscripts for publication.





  • Qualifications

    EDUCATION:


    Bachelor's degree required, Master's degree or higher preferred. Experience in scientific writing may substitute for more advanced degrees.


    EXPERIENCE:


    Required: A minimum of 2 years prior experience in medical or technical writing.


    Preferred: Experience in grant preparation and scientific work in a graduate field of study for 3 or more years.


    FISCAL RESPONSIBILITY:


    Limited. May have financial oversight for a publication describing the work of the group.


    WORKING CONDITIONS:


    Will require extensive word processing activity and ability to communicate effectively with professionals, granting agencies and the lay public.
