Primary Purpose:


  • The Kinder Morgan Process Safety (PSM) Engineer/Specialist will provide technical and process safety expertise and leadership across Kinder Morgan organization. Facilitate the development and implementation of fit-for-purpose standards, procedures and associated processes, utilizing a risk-based approach. Provide subject matter expertise in the understanding, assessment and management of processes to reduce risk and foster the prevention of process safety events.

  • This key role will be mainly office based, and will require the ability to travel to multiple site specific locations.

Essential duties and responsibilities:

  • Partner and support Kinder Morgan Field Operations, Engineering and Maintenance to advise and assist the covered process locations establish and maintain processes to continuously improve process safety performance and compliance with OSHA's PSM and EPA's Risk Management Plan (RMP) regulations, including state and locate requirements.

  • Facilitate, organize and lead PHAs and related technical Safety Studies to ensure they address appropriate areas of Process Safety

  • Coordinate for areas of responsibility the maintenance and accuracy of Risk Management Plans

  • Provide technical and process safety expertise for Management of Change (MOC)

  • Continuously drive effectiveness of established Management of Change and Pre-Start-up Review processes as well as conduct periodic audits to assess performance

  • Develop and deliver process safety training to the Kinder Morgan workforce

  • Act as the technical and process safety subject matter expert for the Kinder Morgan organization.

  • Participate in, share lessons learned and determine process safety consequence status in incident investigations

  • Conduct safety and integrity analysis, quantitative risk analysis and facility siting surveys

Position may be filled at various title/level depending on experience and job skills of the successful candidate.
Position Requirements

Minimum requirements:

Education:

  • Bachelor's degree or better in Chemical Engineering, Fire Protection & Safety Engineering, or other related field preferred. Related experience will be considered in lieu of a degree.
Experience / specific knowledge:

  • Knowledge and experience with relevant industry codes (e.g., OSHA 29 CFR 1910.119 and EPA 40 CFR Part 68), industry standards (RAGAGEP including NFPA, API, ASME, etc.) and regulations associated with process operations and engineering

  • 5+ years' experience in PSM/RMP facility operations / pipeline safety

  • Experience in technical hazard analysis and risk assessment methodologies including awareness and interpretation of quantitative risk assessments

  • Strong understanding of relevant safety standards and regulations, including PHA, HAZOP, LOPA

  • Knowledge in safety studies including high consequence analyses (HCA), Facility Siting API RP 752, 753


Certifications, licenses, registrations:

  • Relevant technical and/or process safety training qualifications

  • Possess and maintain a valid driver's license and driving record satisfactory to the company and its insurers (for travel)


Competencies, skills, and abilities:

  • Provide support and guidance to operations and engineering teams in implementing sustainable process safety programs and culture through knowledge of process safety practices, safety & engineering standards, and practical implementation methods

  • Proficient in using standard spreadsheet, word processing, and database software, including Microsoft Office suite.

  • Strong interpersonal skills, and ability to interact across multiple business units, including but not limited to: other employees, all levels of management, agencies, vendors and customers with courtesy and professionalism

  • Excellent written and oral communication skills, including experience providing training and interacting directly with federal, state or local officials

  • Perform multiple tasks with competing deadlines, successfully

  • Able to work efficiently in a team environment while also being able to work autonomously, as needed, to successfully perform the required and expected duties with minimal direct supervision

  • Capable of taking directions from supervisors, adhering to required work schedules, focus attention on details and follow work rules

  • Track and maintain corrective actions from site PHAs, incident investigations, compliance audits, site safety assessments and other PSM activities

  • Champion a culture of Process Safety excellence at the Company

  • Participate in identifying and evaluating process safety hazards/risks and recommend measures to reduce them

  • Read and manipulate P&ID's when required

  • Mentor others on industry process safety policies, procedures, guidelines and best practices

Physical demands:

  • Ability to stand; walk, sit, ascend/descend stairs, including vertical ladders and stairways

  • Extended periods of sitting may be required for extensive computer work

Working conditions:

  • 30-40% travel is required and anticipated

  • Job level commensurate with experience and skill sets

  • May be required to work non-traditional hours as needed

  • Tasks performed indoors and outdoors in all types of weather conditions

  • The successful candidate will be required to clear a drug screen and complete background check, after an offer has been extended and prior to being employed

Preferred education, experience, certifications, skills, and abilities:
Above the minimum requirements; not required but advantageous in this position:

  • Must have solid understanding of process safety elements, practical knowledge of leading hazard assessments and exposure to industry API Codes and Standards

  • Operational experience and knowledge of natural gas processing facilities, terminals or refineries and related equipment.
