The position develops and manages the implementation of trading strategies relating to the unregulated retail services. The senior unregulated energy trader is expected to take on a leadership role within trading and operations while maximizing earnings with authorized trading strategies and operating within company risk policy and procedures parameters.


Responsibilities:

Primary Job Duties and Responsibilities

  • ?Develops and manages appropriate power trading strategies within the company's value-at-risk limitations.
  • Trades power, capacity, renewable energy credits and derivative products in a fast-paced environment in accordance with the company's risk management policies and procedures.
  • Provides assistance with natural gas physical and financial trading as needed. (20-25%)
  • Stays abreast of retail supply procedures, practices, and regulations in existing and emerging deregulated retail markets. (5-10%)
  • Analyzes the physical and financial positions including forecasted customer load requirements and purchases; develops, implements, and executes appropriate trading strategies related to such positions to maximize earnings. (25-30%)
  • Develops and maintains external relationships with trading counterparties. (5-10%)
  • Monitors energy markets including hub and zonal energy prices, congestion, losses, capacity, and renewable energy credits to provide market-based pricing to energy products, manage risk and develop hedging strategies.
  • Understands market trends and the effects on strategies based on market trends. (35-40%)
  • Monitors and understands operational and hedging impacts of national and state regulations, RTO/ISO rulemaking and policies. (5-10%)
  • Directs market research projects. (5-10%) Provides technical leadership to staff. (0-5%)
  • Performs additional responsibilities as requested or assigned. (0-5%)

Qualifications:

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • ?Bachelor's degree with five to seven years of utility-related or trading experience, or equivalent combination of education and experience. (Typically six years of related, progressive work experience would be needed for candidates applying for this position who do not possess a bachelor's degree).
  • Advanced degree preferred. Six years of related experience in energy trading or a related field are needed to obtain the position.
  • Effective oral and written communication skills.
  • Effective analytical, problem-solving, and decision-making skills.
  • Ability to prioritize and handle multiple tasks and projects concurrently.
  • Support the company's employee policies and procedures, including workplace safety rules.
  • Planning skills necessary to establish energy trading strategies and to adjust the energy trading strategies to fit changing market trends.
  • Analytical skills to survey energy markets, analyze and develop transaction proposals and to understand market trends to determine the best economic and operational alternatives.
  • Technical skills related to understanding power production, production cost methodologies and the characteristics of transmission and control area systems.
  • Leadership skills to demonstrate good examples of professionalism for the other members of the trading team.
  • Knowledge of transmission and real-time operations is desirable. Advanced experience with PC-based software (i.e., spreadsheet, word processing and database) is desirable.
