EXAMPLES OF ESSENTIAL DUTIES
• Light Vehicles: Under direct supervision, assists mechanics in major overhaul of light vehicle components such as: starters, alternators, steering gear, boxes, rear ends, transfer cases, engines, etc.
• Require supervision in performing component replacement on electrical, ignition, exhaust, emission, cooling, fuel, air conditioning, steering, suspension, drive train and engine and brake systems on a variety of vehicles.
• Perform preventative maintenance of engines, transmissions, transaxels, transfer cases, rear ends, and chassis lubrication.
• Medium to Heavy Vehicles: Under direct supervision, assists mechanics in component replacement and major overhaul of all medium to heavy components on diesel engines, emissions, air conditioning, steering, suspension, brakes, drive trains and fire pump systems on a variety of vehicles.
• Require supervision in component replacement on electrical, exhaust, cooling, fuel and gas engine systems.
• Perform tank inspections and repairs such as sandblasting and recoating of tanks on fire engines; Rebuild water valves.
• Preventative maintenance, same as light duty vehicles.
• Special Duties as Required: May operate wrecker, mobile lube truck and respond to emergencies, etc.
• Assist in changing, repairing and mounting tires on a variety of heavy equipment; May be required to work in parts room.
• Required to deliver equipment to outside vendors for warranties and repairs; will be responsible for cleaning shop and facilities.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Experience
One year experience servicing or assisting in minor repairs on a variety of vehicles in a garage where major maintenance and repair work is performed. The required experience may be substituted on the basis of:
Completion of 12 semester or 18 quarter units in automotive mechanics courses, taken at a recognized college being equal to one year of experience.
OR
Completion of 144 hours of automotive mechanics instruction taken at a union training center, adult school, vocational school or specialized industrial program being equal to one year of experience.
License
Possession of a valid California Driver License: Class C at employment. Some positions may require a valid California Driver License: Class B and specific endorsements (e.g., HAZMAT, Air Brake, Automatic Transmission, Tank Vehicle) by the end of the probation period.
DOT Designated Position This position has been designated by the Department of Transportation (DOT) as safety-sensitive, applicants are required to complete a DOT mandated alcohol and drug-screening. (A positive test or refusal to test during the past two years will disqualify an applicant from consideration for County employment). Reference checks from former DOT regulated employers are also required.
Employees in safety-sensitive positions are subject to DOT alcohol/drug testing in the following situations: random, reasonable suspicion/cause, return-to-duty, and post-accident.

Knowledge Of
Methods, tools, equipment, and parts used in the repair of motor vehicles and equipment; the function of mechanical and electrical parts and assembly of motor vehicles; principles of internal combustion engines; operation and uses of diagnostic techniques and practices.
Ability To
Read and write English at a level required for successful job performance; operate tools and check out devices employed in motor vehicle repairs; read and understand shop manuals, mechanical and electrical drawing or diagrams.
