Who We Are:


Swarthmore College's Student Health and Wellness Center houses a collaborative team of physicians, nurse practitioners, registered nurses, a dietitian, an alcohol and other drug counselor, a health educator, and a therapy dog. The Health and Wellness team supports the needs of a diverse student body, approximately 1,600 undergraduate students, by providing individualized holistic care and campus-wide education. The multidisciplinary team of Swarthmore College health leaders is committed to creating a compassionate environment with a vision of empowering students to be engaged in their continuum of lifelong health and well-being.


The wellness education program includes campus-wide events and activities that help build the skills necessary for healthy living through the promotion of physical, intellectual, emotional, sexual, occupational, financial, and spiritual wellness. Be Well at Swarthmore, our institution-specific model of holistic well-being, recognizes wellness as a lifelong and multi-dimensional process that is personal and cultural - there is no "one size fits all" approach to being well. Through programming that supports the development of the eight interrelated domains of well-being, previously mentioned, Be Well offers a positive and affirming perspective on wellness that recognizes our strengths and encourages community members to invest in their collective resources.



The opportunity:



Position Summary


The Wellness Initiative Coordinator is a part-time, non-exempt, non-benefits eligible, 10-month position. The expected schedule is working August through May, at 14 hours per week. This position will assist with the coordination and implementation of Swarthmore College's health promotion and education programs. This position will introduce campus partners to the college's Be Well initiative and further shift the culture of holistic well-being at Swarthmore College. This position will coordinate campus events and promote the connection between departmental programs and Be Well. As a member of the collaborative Student Health and Wellness team, and more specifically, the wellness education team, this position will also support educational programming to the college-aged population in areas encompassed by the Eight Dimensions of Wellness. The educational focus areas will be driven by thoughtful strategy and regular assessment and analysis reports.



Primary Responsibilities



  • Establish rapport and relationships with staff and faculty departments to further support, expand, and brand the Be Well initiatives.

  • Assist in the development and organization of a comprehensive programmatic calendar to support health and wellness promotion.

  • Provide educational outreach and programming to students.

  • Work closely with the assessment and analysis reporting process to ensure data is collected in a timely manner and adjust the educational programming accordingly.

  • Enhance the online and social media presence of Be Well.

  • Assist with orientation programming, particularly in relation to Be Well efforts including the Be Well Pursuit, which occurs the first six weeks of the fall semester.

  • Demonstrate cultural competence and inclusiveness in working with diverse populations.



Who you are:



  • Essential skills: organizational skills, great communication skills, creative brainstorming and idea generation skills, data driven, social media platform advertising skills.

  • Understanding of and appreciation for the values of residential liberal arts colleges rooted in Quaker traditions, including respect for the individual, consensus decision-making and social responsibility.

  • Knowledge of and experience supporting a diverse student community, including race, gender, and LGBTQ+ identities, combined with an affinity for working closely with students.

  • Strong leadership, interpersonal, communication and critical thinking skills are essential.

  • Excellent communication skills, including writing and effective public speaking and presentation skills.

  • Ability to be flexible with schedule. The 14 hours of work per week are expected to take place on campus, Monday through Friday between 9am - 5pm. Occasional evening and weekend hours may be required.



What you bring:



Required Qualifications



  • Bachelor's Degree in health education, public health, or related field.

  • Evidence of health education/health promotion, wellness and/or behavior change communication experience.

  • Broad range of knowledge of health and wellness issues unique to young adults including sexual health, nutrition, fitness, stress management, self-care, mental health, etc.



Preferred Qualifications



  • Master's Degree in health education or science, public health, social work or related field.

  • Certified Health Education Specialist (CHES).

  • Experience in designing, implementing, and evaluating health education programs, in higher education, with the understanding of campus wellness.

  • Excellent written and oral communication skills with the ability to persuade, negotiate, and influence opinion in promoting a health campus culture and environment.

  • Demonstrated public speaking skills, professional presentations, and/or teaching at the higher education level.
