Position Summary:
Timken/American Roller Bearing is currently seeking CNC Lathe Operator (Level 1) for its facility located in Morganton, NC working evening shift (3p-11p) or Midnight Shift (11pm - 7am.) A successful CNC Lathe Operator (Level 1) values safety, quality, productivity, and customer service.
Job Responsibilities:
Maintain surface finish requirements on print and work closely with inspection when problems arise due to quality
Extra precaution needs to be taken in the work and programs because parts are a lot more expensive to replace at this point in the production process
Maintain tighter tolerances when doing finish dimensions
Must be able to understand programing (for example: operators need to be able to program straight cuts, 90-degree radiuses, and chamfer on parts
Will have to offset and change programs to compensate for changing part dimension out of grind and make sure that certain dimensions are correct to print
Able to understand the vertical and horizontal lathe movements and set-ups
Rough hard turning will be responsible for making sure parts clean-up while leaving minimal stock for grinding. This will require the use of the thermometer and using the thermal expansion formula to know how much parts are shrinking
Ability to have a fundamental understanding of indicating parts into close specs
Studies schematic to determine machining to be done, dimensional specifications, set up and operating requirements
Responsible for running 2 machines, unless supervisor approves
Locates jaws, tooling and inserts needed and moves it to work area. Installs on lathe
Loads rough parts into lathe
Mount part between centers, in chuck, or to faceplate, manually or using hoist
Modifies program as necessary to change cut sizes, speeds and feeds, tool positions and program stops
Depresses buttons, toggles, loads program from Greco and starts machining operations
Observes numerical displays on control panel and compares with data on process sheet to verify dimensional adjustments, feed rates, and speeds of machining cuts
Observes machine operation and turns dials and switches to override control and correct machine performance, applying practical knowledge of lathe operation
Inspects all dimensions of first-run piece to include o.d., i.d., undercut size, radius, groove width and depth, roundness, and angles for conformance to specifications, using micrometers and precision dial gauges
Completes and records various data sheets during the process for record keeping purposes
Keeps work area orderly and machine maintained by emptying hoppers, ensuring coolant tanks are full, stacking parts in a safe manner, and checking machine fluids and filters
Follow all PPE and Safety precautions
Proper use of hoist (s) and material handling
Perform other duties as required and assigned
Education:
High School Diploma, or GED
Skills:
Excellent basic math skills plus decimals and fractions
Advanced mechanical aptitude
Strong understanding of using OD/ID mics, surface checkers and light machines while running parts and rolls
Basic reading and writing skills
Ability to use basic tools, read gauges, micrometers, and blueprints
Ability to read and interpret programs to determine if modifications are needed
Experience:
The minimum length of time required to attain quality and quantity standards of assigned work under normal supervision is up to six months. Prior experience reading gauges preferred
Physical Demand:
Constant standing to set up and observe machine operations
Physical lifting of parts is frequently required, up to 25 pounds. Use of hoist is frequently required for heavier weights
Required Personal Protective Equipment:
All associates are required to wear protective eyewear, hearing protection, and slip resistant, steel-toed shoes at all times while on the plant floor.
