Our client is an international leader in design and build projects providing technical and construction management services in addition to the design and delivery of projects across the globe. Due to the growth of their Manhattan operation, there is a need to bring on a Senior Estimator to specifically take a lead on laboratory project work. This individual will play a key part in shaping the department as it continues to grow in New York.

Your new role

As a Senior Estimator, you will oversee commercial interior fit out projects in NY, from initial client meeting through the pre-contract stage. This will include working with design / development, estimating, technical evaluation, assembling and presenting documentation for tenders and contract agreements. You will be leading and developing a high-performing technical delivery team, fostering relationships and collaborating with other teams across the U.S.

Your primary responsibilities will involve leading projects from their inception, managing multidisciplinary teams and agreeing contracts.

The key elements of the role include the following:

  • Lead and coordinate the estimating proposal from scope identification to final costing and submittal of proposal

  • Ensuring engagements have appropriate commercial terms, aligned to the organization and local legislation

  • Thoroughly review plans, drawings and specifications and develop a deep understanding of all materials, labor and time required to complete the project

  • Ensuring all monthly financial project reports are reviewed for accuracy and profitability

  • Ensuring the technical delivery teams are extensively trained in methodology

  • Review drawings and provide comments to highlight potential constructability issues, value engineering opportunities, and accurate scope of work. Spearhead any corrections/changes needed.

  • Budget and net profit targets met

  • Effective cash flow management i.e. negotiation of payment terms

  • Conduct a comprehensive subcontractor bid process to ensure all subs are bidding on the same scope of work, project details, logistics, time schedules, etc.

  • Ensure project schedules are robust enough for estimating and purchasing to occur

  • Produce complete and progressive project budgets throughout the client acquisition process and as projects are initiated

  • Present proposals and progressive budgeting to clients based on their needs and their presentation preferences

  • Ensure project profitability, client satisfaction and quality subcontractors on each job

What you'll need to succeed

  • Design & Build understanding

  • In depth knowledge and understanding of the local market and subcontractors

  • Build and maintain a strong relationship with clients

  • Prepare detailed trade cost plans, including preliminaries, trade costs, furniture, authority costs, engineers' fees and design using standard codes.

  • Understand the tendering and pricing process and be capable of negotiating to obtain the best price

  • Assist in the effective handover of the project between Technical and Project Management when required

  • Review contractor offers and provide recommendations

  • Manage simultaneous projects - from office & site visits

  • Provide technical input to client fee proposal

  • Manage stakeholder expectations through meetings and good communication

  • Prepare client programs to accurately reflect project delivery milestones and deadlines

  • Provide support and guidance on projects to identify potential risks, then work to find innovative and suitable solutions
