A Day in the Life

This position will be based out of Medtronic's campus in North Haven, CT and reports to the Senior Engineering Manager, General Surgical Technology RPE. The R-D Engineer II will work on RPE projects for the General Surgical Portfolio and collaborate with cross-functional partners to ensure maintenance of design intent and deliver successful design changes for existing products.

Outstanding written and verbal communication skills are critical to success in this role, as is the ability to thrive in a fast-paced environment. You will work closely with cross functional engineering teams from various global manufacturing sites to assess, plan and execute projects that enhance our general surgery products. Collaboration skills are essential in ensuring successful interaction with project management, manufacturing, marketing, and quality groups to meet timelines and business needs. This person will have practical technical knowledge and demonstrated competence obtained through advanced education combined with relevant experience.

Responsibilities may include the following and other duties may be assigned.

• Maintains design intent of existing products per internal change development process (CDP).

• Initiates feasibility studies of the design to determine if capable of functioning as intended.

• Generates design test protocols, test reports and engineering change orders.

• Designs, develops, analyzes, troubleshoots, and provides technical skills during research and/or product development.

• Monitors documentation maintenance throughout all phases of research and development.

• Organizes the coordination of design activities with outside suppliers, consultants, and Medtronic's global manufacturing plants to ensure timely completion of deliverables.

• Participates in FMEAS (Design & Process), Quality Impact Assessments and Usability Analysis.

• Presents information through effective communication with the various cross functional teams.

Must Have: Minimum Requirements

• Bachelor's degree required and a minimum of 2 years of relevant experience or advanced degree with 0 years of experience.

Nice to Have:


  • Requires practical knowledge and demonstrated competence obtained through advanced education combined with relevant experience.
  • Ability to work independently with general supervision on larger, moderately complex projects / assignments.
  • Ability to set objectives for own job area to meet project goals and assignments including project milestones with some involvement in cross functional assignments.
  • Leadership skills with the ability to communicate and influence internal teams and external contacts by sharing information, status, needs and issues to inform, gain input, and support decision-making.
  • Proficiency in MiniTab and Microsoft Office - Outlook, Word, Power Point, Excel, and MS Teams.
  • Comfortable working in a fast paced, cross disciplinary environment
  • Takes initiative in keeping current with technology developments in specialized area.
  • Working knowledge of applicable FDA and ISO standards.
  • General understanding of engineering practices, product safety and root cause analysis.
  • General knowledge/awareness of Design for Reliability and Manufacturability, Design for Six Sigma, Failure Mode Effects Analysis, Statistical Analysis methods, and Design of Experiments.
  • General knowledge of structured product development including engineering verification, test development and execution, report writing and development of presentations.
