Job Description:


ECS seeks a Scientific Writer to join our Workshop and Conference Services team. The position requires the candidate to serve as a scientific writer in support of Scientific Conferences and Workshops. This role falls within our Workshop and Conference Services Program, which provides in-house scientific logistical support to high-level scientific conferences. The candidate is required to provide on-site support for applicable events.


The incumbent of this role will be responsible for creating, managing, and executing assignments that synthesize and communicate complex scientific concepts for multiple audiences. They must be able to think analytically, articulate ideas clearly, write and edit a wide array of copy. They should be skilled in writing reports, executive summaries, news stories, magazine-style longer-form articles, and other communication materials with attention to facts, detail, and context. The candidate should be able to work under pressure, be constructively proactive, successfully manage multiple projects and meet multiple tight deadlines while negotiating new and ongoing priorities. They should be able to work in a dynamic, complex environment with a high level of communication, transparency, and diplomacy. Experience with health and science research, NIH, or Aligned health/science federal agency experience is preferred.


Responsibilities:

  • Attend scientific meetings, conferences, and workshops (In-person when applicable).
  • Produce work products that articulate, interpret, and explain complex research findings using plain language. The products are typically intended for viewing by general audiences, both scientific and administrative.
  • Assist and collaborate with NIH scientific and administrative leadership on policy interpretation and implementation.
  • Write, edit, and review content that includes reports, executive summary reports, and other publications.
  • Interact professionally with biomedical clinicians, researchers, and policymakers with an intermediate level of scientific fluency.
  • Review and amend work in response to leadership feedback.
  • Provide research and writing support to assigned brand teams and new business efforts.
  • Work independently and as part of a multidisciplinary team that includes a program manager, graphic designers, workshop coordinators, and internal scientific oversight team.
  • Attend meetings as required, including internal kick-off meetings, status meetings, and client/author calls.
  • Produce slide presentations, High-level detailed notes, executive meeting summaries, web-based and social media materials, content for digital assets, and other promotional scientific/medical communication materials suitable for Program Officers.
  • Write scientifically accurate, fully referenced materials appropriate to the target audience.
  • Ensure that written materials meet the authors' communication objectives, client specifications, and industry guidelines.
  • Interact with key experts to solicit their input, facilitate alignment, resolve queries, and make content suggestions.
  • Research medical topics using relevant information sources and annotate those sources while writing.
  • Work independently to incorporate revisions and address reviewer questions/comments.
  • Understand expectations regarding budgeted hours and deadlines and communicate with the team about these as needed.
  • Contribute strategic recommendations and suggestions for continuous quality improvement.
  • Other duties as assigned by the PM/Workshop Manager.



Required Skills:

  • A strong scientific understanding (MD, PharmD, or PhD preferred) and excellent writing skills.
  • Experience with health and science research and previous work with NIH or Aligned health/science federal agencies is preferred.
  • The ability to handle multiple projects from concept to completion, work independently, and adhere to tight deadlines.
  • High proficiency in Microsoft Office, particularly Word and PowerPoint.
  • The ability to work and problem-solve in a high-stress, time-sensitive environment.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.



Desired Skills:

  • Experience with health and science research, NIH, or Aligned health/science federal agency experience is preferred.
  • A master's degree or higher in a biomedical research field (or similar) and a minimum of 5+ years of work experience will be given preference.
