Position Overview

Plan, direct or coordinate, usually through subordinate personnel, activities concerned with the construction and maintenance of structures, paving, highway and commercial projects. Participate in the conceptual development of a paving project and oversee its organization, scheduling, budgeting, and implementation. This work is conducted under direction of the Construction Area Manager.

Key Responsibilities (Essential Duties and Functions)


  • Ensure a safe work environment by overseeing compliance with all safety policies, conducting toolbox talks and ensuring personnel have the appropriate tools and equipment.

  • Studies production schedules and estimates worker hour requirements for completing of job assignment; maintains time and production records.

  • Interprets specifications, blueprints and job orders to workers and assign duties.

  • Must be knowledgeable with HMA and asphalt paving.

  • Maintain positive relations with the customer/owner representatives.

  • Monitor project costs and revenues by reviewing internal project reports and meeting frequently with the customer/owner representatives on pay quantities prior to each estimate.

  • Daily supervision of crew. Carry out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the organization's policies and applicable law including but not limited to training employees, planning, assigning and directing work, appraise performance, rewarding and disciplining employees, addressing complaints and resolving problems.

  • Possess basic computer knowledge in order to become efficient in necessary computer programs.

  • Signal operators of construction equipment to facilitate alignment and movement of materials.

  • Be knowledgeable in all aspects of work activities that are being supervised, including all paving equipment.

  • May estimate, order and inspect materials. May determine tonnage and type of materials required.

  • Confers with customers, field personnel, other supervisors, and subcontractors engaged in planning and executing work procedures, interpreting specifications and coordinating various phases of project.

  • Inspects work in progress, reviews materials used, and adjusts work schedules as appropriate.

  • Directs appropriate traffic control methods and techniques wherever necessary.

  • Completion of required paperwork on a daily, weekly and as needed basis.

  • May also perform any and all related duties that pertain to construction operations.

  • Assist construction crew with various duties such as; shoveling, operations or the operation of power tools.

  • Display strong leadership and teamwork skills.

  • Be able to interact with vendors, construction employees, and different levels of management.

  • Must possess a valid driver's license to drive a company vehicle.

  • Must be willing to travel and work away from home when required.

  • Must be willing to work nights and weekends when necessary.

  • Cleanliness & neatness of all equipment, tools, desks, & computers is a must at all times.

  • Strict adherence to safety requirements and procedures as outlined in the Environmental, Health & Safety Manual.

  • Strict adherence to Thompson Arthur policies and procedures as outlined in the Employee Manual.

  • Willingness to work in a team environment and assist co-workers with other duties as required.

Qualifications

To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily.

Education/Experience


  • Minimum high school diploma or general education degree (GED) required.

  • 5 years' experience in construction industry focused on paving, highway and structures.

  • Good communication skills

  • Basic computer knowledge
