About the Department



The Department of Pediatrics at the University of Chicago is a dynamic and stimulating place to work. In addition to our provision of clinical care at UChicago Medicine (UCM) Comer Children's Hospital and at our regional sites, we are currently expanding our clinical care across Northern Illinois and Northwestern Indiana. In collaboration with our partners in the Chicagoland Children's Health Alliance (CCHA; Advocate Children's Hospital, and NorthShore University Health System). CCHA has responsibility for the care of almost 1 million children. The Department has 6 ambulatory sites and 3 inpatient sites of care across the region with the goal of providing care close to home' whenever feasible (https://pediatrics.uchicago.edu/). Job Information






Job Summary:



Under moderate supervision, the Abstractor/Coder is responsible for accurate and timely review and coding of inpatient and outpatient physician services including procedures and surgeries. Ensure that all external regulations affecting the coding process are administered to compliance. Review physician reports and append appropriate CPT, HCPCS, ICD-10 codes, and modifiers verifying that physician documentation supports the billing.



Responsibilities:



  • Obtain appropriate reimbursement levels for professional services by reviewing and coding medical procedures, diagnoses, and physician visits.

  • Analyze denial and rejection reports, and appeal wherever appropriate.

  • Submit charges to UCPG in a timely manner.

  • Work in collaboration with the team to provide guidance to faculty and staff on the charge capture and documentation processes.

  • Educate physicians and support staff on coding issues, including issues related to fraud and abuse as it relates to coding/professional billing/clinical documentation.

Additional Requirements





Education, Experience, or Certifications:




Education:



  • High school diploma or equivalent required.




Experience:



  • 2-4 years of experience working in physician/healthcare billing and physician coding strongly preferred.

  • Prior experience with electronic billing and medical record systems (i.e. EPIC) is strongly preferred.




Licenses and Certifications:



  • Certification through AAPC with CPC credential or AHIMA CCS-P credential is required.




Technical Knowledge or Skills:



  • Proficient in Microsoft Office Applications required.




Pay Range:



  • $25.32 - $37.05 per hour.
