Department Summary
The Office of Advising Services promotes high-quality advising across UNT's advising units through coordination, training/ professional development, and leadership support. Our advising team offers pathways counseling to prospective and current students, and TSI advising. The office is located in the Academic Success Center at Sage Hall.
Position Overview
This position is responsible for providing guidance to students by appraising their interests, aptitudes, and abilities to develop a career path and degree fit. Connects students with available resources for academic success and personal/professional development. This position is responsible for providing guidance to students on Texas Success Initiative (TSI) requirements. This position assists in implementing programs related to student success and retention. This is a grant funded position. Continued employment is contingent upon available grant funding.
Minimum Qualifications
Master's Degree and two years' of experience in student affairs, student services, counseling, professional academic advising, or related experience.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
* Considerable knowledge of University policies and procedures related to functional area (or ability to rapidly assimilate).
* Current knowledge of student development and counseling theory.
* Strong presentation, problem solving, and critical thinking skills.
* Strong counseling skills including career development and group facilitation.
* Ability to communicate effectively with diverse populations verbally and in writing.
* Ability to develop and maintain effective working relationships.
* Ability to work independently.
* Remains active in professional development.
Preferred Qualifications
* Experience in an advising office, counseling students who present with uncertainty of major, advising transfer students, and/or working with at-risk populations.
* Knowledgeable on Texas Success Initiative.
* Demonstrates strong organizational skills and attention to detail.
* Demonstrates strong communication skills, verbal and written.
* Experience working with multiple departments and/or committee work.
