The Orthopedic Research Department in Naples, FL is responsible for supporting all benchtop and clinical research testing endeavors across all product portfolios. Specifically, the Biomaterials Team is responsible for mechanical and polymeric product testing that supports product development, manufacturing process changes, regulatory submissions, product design changes and helps drive business decisions. The individual will be detail oriented in the execution and documentation of approved test methods and will be expected to communicate issues in a timely and accurate manner.

Main Objective:

To perform product testing in a laboratory setting and report findings

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:


  • Design and perform research studies to facilitate the verification and validation requirement of new product development. Such research could include:

    • Static and dynamic mechanical testing

    • Polymeric testing

    • Manage and maintain degradation, shelf life and accelerated aging studies

    • Evaluation of biomaterials and biologics



  • Design and perform research to facilitate evaluation of new technologies and design concepts

  • Design and implement post market research to support existing devices and technologies

  • Assist in the development and implementation of research procedures and methods.

  • Participate in the Design History process during product development with specific responsibility in facilitating verification and regulatory activities

  • Prepare technical reports, maintain and create various engineering test environments, and disseminate information to facilitate product development decision making.

Education and Experience:


  • Bachelor's degree in a related science field required. Preferably in Polymer Science/Engineering or Materials Science/Engineering or Mechanical Engineering

  • Master's or PHD degree in a related science field preferred.

Knowledge and Skill Requirements/Specialized Courses and/or Training:


  • Basic understanding of polymer and metal properties and mechanical and chemical test equipment.

  • Must be able to use mechanical and polymeric analysis test lab equipment in a proficient manner to acquire data/test results. Good documentation skills and the ability to write accurate test procedures/summaries/reports upon completion of requested tests required.

  • Knowledge of statistical methods is preferred.

  • Knowledge of sterilization processes is preferred.

  • Knowledge of manufacturing processes is preferred.

  • Knowledge of basic anatomy and ASTM standards for medical devices a plus.

Machine, Tools, and/or Equipment Skills:

Instruments used will include Materials Testing Systems, Inherent Viscosity Testing equipment, Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR), Differential Scanning calorimeters, custom made testing apparatuses, and data acquisition systems.
