Senior R&D Engineer - Surgical Operating Unit

The Senior R&D Engineer is responsible for Released Product Engineering activities for an battery powered surgical stapling devices. The focus will be design and development activities to implement changes and product enhancements that ensure sustainability and improve clinical performance. The Senior R&D Engineer will be expected to lead and/or champion initiatives from concept through implementation including presenting information/status of initiatives to management. They will also be expected to provide leadership/mentorship to junior engineers.

A Day in the Life


  • Represents the organization in providing imaginative, thorough, practical solutions to difficult technical issues associated with specific products that are consistent with the organizations objectives.
  • Anticipates and identifies problems of a unique and challenging nature, including those requiring research and/or analysis to identify.
  • Work on highly complex technical problems and provide solutions that are highly innovative and ingenious to a broad range of problems.
  • Collaborates with peers to manage the development of appropriate testing to verify product meets internal and external customer requirements.
  • Reviews and evaluates development protocols, results and conclusions.
  • Demonstrates an understanding of functional and customer requirements.
  • Collaborates with peers to develop appropriate testing to verify product meets requirements and sets appropriate specifications to ensure product reliability and manufacturability.
  • Investigates customer complaints on existing products and helps to determine root cause of complaint and corrective actions if necessary.
  • Incorporates required regulatory standards in developmental and/or sustaining engineering projects.
  • Contributes inventions, new designs and techniques associated with the completion of specific projects.
  • Provides primary technical contributions and or may lead sub projects.
  • Adheres to safety policy and procedures.
  • Designs and redesigns medium-high complexity medical devices and subsystems.
  • Tests and optimizes the design by conducting experiments and evaluations including numerical verification (finite element analysis (FEA), tolerance analysis etc.)
  • Prepares documentation in accordance with relevant internal Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) and Design Control.
  • Interacts with suppliers, participates in Design for Manufacturability (DFM) and Design for Assembly (DFA) processes to access component and assembly manufacturability.
  • Participates in Failure Mode and Effects Analysis (FMEA) and follows up on generated recommendations.
  • Participates in pre-clinical in vivo labs, observing cases in hospitals and through planned and unplanned customer interactions.
  • Creates and evaluates prototypes to generate concept and model approvals.
  • Conducts project management tasks and documentation with design controls and risk analysis in accordance with established SOPs.
  • Prepares reports, presentations and spreadsheets of an analytical and interpretative nature to be presented to peers, executives, and customer

  • Designs, develops, analyzes, troubleshoots and provides technical skills during research and/or product development.
  • Designs studies to investigate specific life science questions within field of expertise.

  • Additional tasks as assigned

Must Have: Minimum Requirements


  • Bachelor's degree with 4+ years of engineering experience

OR

  • An advanced degree with 2+ years of engineering experience

Nice to Have


  • 4+ years of medical device mechanical design experience
  • Bachelor's/advanced degree in a technical field such as engineering
  • Electro-mechanical device experience
  • Demonstrated ability to interpret a variety of technical information and deal with several abstract and concrete variables
  • Knowledge and understanding of design change control process
  • DRM, DFSS and/or Six Sigma training/experience
  • Good communication and teamwork skills.
  • In depth knowledge and application of Microsoft Office

The provided base salary range is used nationally (except in certain CA locations).The rate offered is compliant with federal/local regulations and may vary by experience,certification/education, market conditions, location, etc.
