Research Assistant I
Summary:
The Research Assistant I will be working in the Snyder lab and will be involved in a broad array of diseases, typically involving human and animal stem cells and often involving animal modeling. The Research Assistant I will be learning new technologies, as well as applying existing knowledge to procedures and bench-work.
Duties and Responsibilities:
Learn new technical skills (cell culture; how to work with animal models (typically rodents) of disease, assess them, and treat them; immunostaining and real-time bioluminescent imaging; molecular characterization).
Learn how to explain scientific concepts to a non-scientific audience.
Learn procedures for animal work connected with the diseases under study – typically involving nervous system, lung, and gut – but other systems may be involved.
Determines methods and procedures on new assignments or day-to-day work
Keeps written records of experiments and data organization
Troubleshoots problems and develops solutions to technical problems of moderate to high scope using independent thinking, literature, and colleagues as resources to solve problems
Provides interpretation and analysis of results
Maintains various reagent collections, and inventories
Learn how to write a simple grant proposal.
Gain presentation experience via in-person and video conferencing.
Attend and participate regularly in the lab's regularly scheduled lab meetings and other events.
Teach skills to new members of the lab.
Help maintain lab core equipment – e.g., incubators, freezers, etc.
Education and/or Experience:
Bachelor's degree in one of the biological science or related studies OR equivalent education, training and/or experience from which comparable knowledge, skills and abilities have been attained is required
Prior lab experience is a plus
Other Knowledge, Skills and/or Abilities:
Work independently as well as in a team environment
Be responsible and have strong time management skills
Able to analyze and resolve issues of moderate complexity
Possess strong attention to detail and organizational skills
Demonstrate professional communication and interpersonal skills
Professional proficiency in Microsoft Office

Cell culture experience, ideally with human stem cells – primary, embryonic, and induced pluripotent
Experience with microscopy
Experience with molecular and cellular techniques, such as immunostaining, Western blotting, preparing DNA, RNA, and protein preparations
Experience working with animals – including living/behaving; euthanasia, perfusion, dissection; survival surgery and anesthesia; behavioral testing
Supervisory Responsibilities:
While no formal supervisory responsibilities, it is expected that this individual will help teach and precept new members of the lab (including interns, students, rotators, visiting scientists)
Compensation:
The expected compensation for this position is between $16.85 -24.00/hour commensurate with experience.
