Job Summary

The Sr Staff Geologist is in a small, focused, geotechnical team charged with influencing and executing Murphy's Exploration portfolio and assisting with other business units as required.

The ideal candidate should be a self-starter who is comfortable working on multiple projects simultaneously in a fast-paced environment. The candidate must have demonstrated broad expertise in both integrated petroleum systems analysis as well as Petroleum Geochemistry. The candidate must be proficient in fundamental regional geologic analysis to generate, mature, assess and recommend new and creative exploration and new access concepts for recommendation.

They will have a clear record of varied technical exposure to many global basins, depositional systems, and petroleum systems.

While the candidate is expected to work independently and within small teams, successful collaboration across various domains, exploration, sub-surface, and business development, is crucial. Fostering cross-disciplinary collaboration often leads to innovative solutions and robust evaluations.

The successful candidate will be a recognized expert within Murphy, with a strong network in the wider Industry. They will play a pivotal role by providing both formal and informal technical input across a diverse range of Murphy projects. As a leader, they will exemplify best practices in exploration processes and actively drive technical excellence throughout the organization.

The Sr Staff Geologist will openly and willingly mentor and coach less experienced staff, attend and participate in peer assists/ reviews, and work with management to define processes around project QA/QC and due diligence.

A firm understanding of geologic models for resource estimation and risk application utilizing statistical software such as RoseRA is required. Additional beneficial skills include a demonstrated proficiency in Zetaware software, other 3D basin modelling tools, the Kingdom interpretation platform, and a familiarity with Petrel.

The candidate will need to present to senior Murphy Management and represent the company in meetings with external partners and government entities. Therefore, a demonstrated ability to construct a compelling narrative, document findings, and create concise supporting presentation to clearly convey recommendations is essential.

Responsibilities

Basin-Scale Regional Evaluations are grounded in an understanding of the Hydrocarbon System, by integrating basin scale seismic interpretation and well log information, geochemical data and generating fully integrated basin models.


  • Drive Petroleum systems projects and integrate them with other geological and geophysical studies for exploration projects to establish a solid understanding of exploration risks from basin to prospect scale
  • Modelling the controlling factors of basin modelling such as source rock characterization and maturity, hydrocarbon generation, expulsion, migration and entrapment, fluid prediction and deliverability
  • Identifying pacing technology requirements for geochemistry and petroleum system modelling to support exploration future needs and recommend appropriate novel technology
  • Lead and advise the activities of basin modeling for basin & play assessment and prospect risk analysis under time constraints in support of exploration
  • Block-level evaluations focused on potential farm-in opportunities
  • Strong data integration skills
  • CRS Mapping, Prospect Risking
  • Build and maintain exploration databases, including Geochemical database
  • Generate and present technical material to peers, management, and external partners

Qualifications/Requirements

  • Degree in Geology or Geochemistry
  • Minimum 15 years' experience in geotechnical role with minimum 8 years current experience working international
  • Available to travel internationally on an occasional basis for data rooms and other meetings
  • Willingness to flexibly work multiple projects simultaneously in a fast-paced environment
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills
