The Africana Studies interdisciplinary program at the University of Richmond invites applications for a tenure-track assistant professor or tenured associate or full professor in the field of Black Diasporas, open to all areas of specialization. We seek a teacher-scholar whose work encompasses a broad spectrum of teaching, scholarship and/or creative activity related to Africa, and/or the African Diaspora. We are especially interested in identifying colleagues who bring new methods and perspectives to understanding the African diaspora, and who extend the methodological, thematic, geographic, and/or chronological reach of our faculty. Candidates must hold a Ph.D. by the start of employment, August 2024. Candidates will be screened by an interdisciplinary search committee. Each candidate will also meet and receive the approval of the department into which the candidate would be hired.

University of Richmond faculty are expected to maintain the highest standards of academic excellence in teaching, research/scholarship, and service. The successful candidate will be expected to excel in teaching, maintain an active research agenda including publication in peer-reviewed outlets, and make meaningful service contributions to the Africana Studies Program, the department in which they will also be hired, and the university. The University provides faculty several resources to support teaching and scholarship that include the Teaching and Scholarship Hub and the Bonner Center for Civic Engagement.

Incoming faculty will be expected to teach core courses in the Africana Studies Program in addition to courses in their areas of specialization. We welcome applications from scholars who hold (or are near completion of Ph.D.) a Ph.D. in any humanistic or social scientific field. We welcome applications from scholars with a strong interest in a current or future leadership role and making contributions to the administration of the Africana Studies Program. The hired candidate will have substantial input into the program's curricular development. In addition to advising students, responsibilities would include participating in campus-wide committees; engaging and supporting Africana Studies, its programs, and events; research, scholarship and/or creative activity; and service to the university and profession.
