The company's Port Arthur Manufacturing Complex in Port Arthur, TX, is comprised of North America's largest refinery with a total throughput of 720,000 barrels per day, the world's second largest lubricants plant, and an integrated chemical plant. Position Overview:



The Strategy and Business Development group is responsible for shaping and implementing the Motiva growth strategy. This role supports the implementation of Motiva's strategy through identifying and developing commercial opportunities, providing input and challenge to business unit strategies, ensuring alignment across different disciplines and levels in the company, and executing strategic initiatives that deliver sustained, industry-leading performance.


The role will provide accountability for delivery of strategic projects and business opportunities for Motiva's Specialties (primarily Base Oils), Chemicals (primarily Olefins and Cyclohexane) and Logistics. Business opportunities may be internal to Motiva as well as external through the development of third-party partnerships or joint ventures.



Responsibilities:



  • Strategy Development: Adjust and refine Motiva's strategic direction in the refining, chemicals, logistics and base oil sectors. Utilize manufacturing and operational acumen to identify strategic opportunities within Motiva's assets and translate those into cohesive and holistic plans that enhance the business' profitability and resiliency over time. Identify new market trends, competitive dynamics, and emerging opportunities. Collaborate with senior management to define and execute long-term growth strategies.

  • Market Analysis: Partner with Motiva's S&MA Group to conduct comprehensive market research and analysis to identify potential growth areas and refine business development priorities. Evaluate industry trends, competitor activities, and business needs to inform strategic decision-making.

  • Business Development: Identify and evaluate new business opportunities within the refining, chemicals, base oils and logistics sectors, such as acquisitions, joint ventures, partnerships, commercial options and market expansions. Conduct feasibility studies, financial analysis, and risk assessments to support investment decisions.

  • Relationship Management: Establish and maintain relationships with key stakeholders within Motiva and Aramco, including industry associations, consultancies, customers, suppliers, and government entities. Collaborate with internal and external partners to drive business development initiatives and ensure alignment with the Motiva's objectives.

  • Competitive Intelligence: Monitor and analyze competitors' activities, market dynamics, and regulatory changes in the refining, chemicals and logistics sectors. Provide insights and recommendations regarding competitive positioning and potential threats.

  • Financial Analysis: Partner with Transactional BD Group to conduct financial modeling and analysis to evaluate the financial viability of business development opportunities. Assess project profitability, return on investment, and payback periods to support decision-making processes.

  • Strategic Partnerships: Identify and pursue strategic partnerships and collaboration with other industry organizations. Evaluate potential synergies, negotiate agreements, and manage ongoing relationships to drive growth and value creation.

  • Performance Measurement: Develop and implement performance metrics to assess the effectiveness of business development initiatives and track progress against strategic objectives. Prepare regular reports and presentations for senior management to communicate status, key findings and recommendations.

  • Project Management: Drive business development projects from initial concept premise to final concept selection to implement the defined business objective and evaluate all options. Manage scope, risk and interfaces to achieve project goals. Develop the Investment Proposal (IP) and arrange for the Business Engineering Alignment Meeting (BEAM) and develop Project Premise.




Experience and Qualifications:




Basic Qualifications:



  • Bachelor's degree required. in Business, Finance, Engineering, or a related field; MBA preferred.

  • 10+ years of experience in manufacturing with extensive operational and/or commercial understanding.

  • 5+ years of experience in strategy development and business development within the base oil, refining or petrochemical industry.

  • Strong knowledge of the chemical, refining, base oil, or midstream/pipeline sectors, including industry trends, technologies, and regulatory frameworks.

  • Proven track record of identifying and executing successful business development opportunities.

  • Excellent analytical and financial modeling skills.

  • Exceptional communication, negotiation and presentation abilities, with the ability to convey complex ideas to diverse audiences.

  • Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to collaborate effectively with cross-functional teams.

  • Self-directed, strategic thinking, problem-solving, and decision-making capabilities.

  • Ability to work in a fast-paced, dynamic environment and manage multiple projects simultaneously.

  • Able to work with minimal supervision and make quick, informed decisions.

  • Ability to travel domestical and abroad on occasion (< 10% of time)
