Responsibilities

The Law Enforcement Officer is responsible for the protection of life and property, prevention of crime, misconduct, traffic and crowd control, criminal and traffic law enforcement, criminal and traffic accident investigation, community service and providing information regarding laws, University policy, and distribution of information to the community.


Patrols the FSU campus for the primary purposes of seeking out and apprehending violators of Florida statutes, identifying and reporting safety hazards and providing a visible presence throughout campus to deter crime.


Responds to burglar alarms, traffic accidents and other incidents that may be reported. Interacts with other law enforcement agencies to assist and cooperate in their efforts and to secure their assistance with preventing and responding to situations on campus. Protects the safety of drivers, bikers and pedestrians through traffic control and direction in the event of collisions, construction work or other mitigating circumstances.


Provides non-emergency assistance to members of the University community, such as unlocking buildings and car doors as needed, helping with dormitory move-in and providing directions.


Acts as a first responder when necessary, providing CPR and first aid.


Supports the Investigations unit in the resolution of open investigations by securing crime scenes, assisting with evidence collection, taking witness statements and conducting interviews with victims, witnesses and suspects.


Writes and submits reports with all pertinent details related to cases of lost, stolen or damaged property, incidents in which harm has been threatened or inflected on any person, and other miscellaneous incidents on campus with a bearing on safety and security.


Provides security services for scheduled events occurring both indoors and outdoors on campus, in partnership with other law enforcement agencies and security officers. Prevents crime and apprehends those in violation of the law through scheduled crime suppression details, such as DUI checkpoints.


Supports the Communications unit by providing coverage and support in handling incoming calls during times of high demand or in the event of gaps in staffing.
Supports the Crime Prevention unit by participating in formal crime prevention programs, such as the Adopt-A-Cop program, the Greek Cops program, and Rape the Awareness and Defense program. Prevents crime through informal contact with students, faculty and staff to raise awareness of safety issues on campus and to encourage safe behavior and wise decision-making.


Other duties as determined by the needs of the Department and University.

Qualifications

High school diploma or equivalency.



  • Must be at least 19 years of age.

  • Must be a citizen of the United States.

  • Must meet the requirements of Section 943.13, Florida Statutes, and the ability to pass the state certification exam for Law Enforcement Officers within six months of being hired.

  • A valid State of Florida driver's license or the ability to obtain prior to hire.

  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with others.

  • Ability to collect and evaluate data; to apply laws, rules, regulations, and policies to situations using appropriate judgment.

  • Ability to deal with individuals and critical situations in an effective manner; and to plan, organize, and coordinate work assignments.

  • Ability to complete complex psycho motor skills necessary to drive a patrol vehicle; operate a bicycle; and use of standard lethal and non-lethal weapons as appropriate in the application of law enforcement duties.

Considerations

This is an USPS (University Support Personnel System) position.


This position requires successful completion of a criminal history background check.


Law enforcement officers assigned to the Patrol Division will work 12-hour shifts (6:30pm - 6:30am or 6:30am - 6:30pm), 80 hours bi-weekly. Additionally, the position may be required to assist during home football games, holidays, and during state, national or University emergencies.


Special assignments as directed by law enforcement chain of command.


This position requires completion of a supplemental employment questionnaire and a post-offer employment physical exam, drug screening, psychological evaluation, police background check, and Federal Bureau of Investigations (FBI)/Florida Department of Law Enforcement (FDLE) fingerprinting.
