The Guana Tolomato Matanzas National Estuarine Research Reserve (GTMNERR) and the University of North Florida invite applications for the position of Stewardship Coordinator. Located near St. Augustine, Florida, the GTM Research Reserve is one of 30 sites around the U.S. that make up NOAA's National Estuarine Research Reserve System (NERRS).
Based on the reserve's management plan, responsibilities include the following,
1) designing and implementing research and long-term monitoring that complements the reserve's System-Wide Monitoring Program (SWMP) and informs habitat restoration and management,2) coordinating habitat mapping and change analysis efforts in conjunction with NERRS priorities,3) designing, implementing, and evaluating habitat restoration and management projects for GTM's estuaries and associated wetlands,4) advising/mentoring graduate and undergraduate research students in habitat management and landscape ecology,5) supporting internally and externally funded visiting investigators in habitat management and landscape ecology,6) serving as the Aquatic Preserve Manager for the Guana River Marsh Aquatic Preserve and Pellicer Creek Aquatic Preserve, which includes writing management plans and providing technical assistance to state, regional or local permitting, planning or enforcement authorities to ensure that regulations are properly implemented, applied, and enforced,7) collaborating with local, state, and national partners to maximize efficiency and efficacy in habitat restoration and management, and8) representing the Stewardship Sector and the Reserve's Aquatic Preserves at local, regional, and national meetings including serving on the steering committee of the Northeast Estuarine Restoration Team.

Other duties include supervising Stewardship staff (typically 1-2 positions); writing, reporting on, and managing grants; writing technical reports and research papers for publication; and developing and managing annual work plans and budgets. The Stewardship Coordinator is housed at the GTM NERR headquarters in South Ponte Vedra and serves as a faculty member in the Department of Biology at the University of North Florida in nearby Jacksonville, Florida.
Knowledge of terminology, principles, analytical techniques, and data collection and analysis procedures for the natural and estuarine sciences; Experience in collecting and analyzing biological and chemical specimens or samples; Skill in and experience in planning and implementing research and resource management projects; Skill in and experience in using ArcGIS tools and applications; Ability to understand and apply applicable environmental rules, regulations, policies, and procedures relating to environmental programs; Ability to develop long range management plans; Ability to work independently and on teams; Ability to effectively mentor, supervise, and train students, staff, and volunteers; Ability to plan, organize, and coordinate work assignments;
A Ph.D. in appropriate field is preferred. Salary negotiable based on experience and credentials.
Experience working in saltmarsh and/or mangrove ecosystems is required.
Ability to safely operate and maintain vessels, vehicles, and field equipment; Ability to communicate clearly verbally and in writing; Ability to communicate with the public in a courteous and tactful manner.
Background Check: This position requires a level II background check, which includes fingerprinting. In conjunction with the University's policy, this position may also require a credit check.
