The Learning Strategies Specialist is a part-time (.50FTE, Student Services Officer 2) position with the Master of Science in PA Studies (MSPA) program in the School of Medicine. The overall purpose of the Learning Strategies Specialist (LSS) position is to provide learning strategies for MSPA students during both preclinical and clinical years at the School of Medicine. Preclinical students are referred by faculty or self-referral for concerns including, but not limited to, memory, attention issues, time management, organization, poor retention, or weak test performance in courses. Clinical students are referred by faculty or self-referral for assistance regarding poor test performance on standardized medical examinations, issues with following directions within the clinics, time management, organization, or poor written or oral responses in clinical settings. New programs are initiated by the LSS based upon research, collaborating with faculty, and/or working with the Office of Accessible Education. The LSS is responsible for Learning Strategy Workshops such as Test Taking Strategies, Stress Management, and Memory Tips to Reduce Study Time.


Responsibilities of the individual in this role include the ability to:

  • The Learning Strategies Specialist will support MSPA students who require or desire learning support to improve academic performance. They will work with faculty and staff to maintain a tutorial program for MSPA students.
  • Develop, implement, and oversee learning support programs for students, e.g., study group programs for pairs/small groups, learning strategy workshops, tutoring service, etc. Assess the needs, strengths, and weaknesses of students through a variety of means including one-on-one assessments, conversations, or interviews and observations.
  • Refer, as needed, all MSPA students who disclose or are suspected of having a disability, including learning, psychological/psychiatric, physical, attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, or chronic medical conditions to the University's Office of Accessible Education (OAE) and/or Schwab. The OAE is the campus office designated to work with Stanford students with disabilities, at both the undergraduate and graduate levels, including the professional schools.

DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS:


  • Master's degree or higher in psychology, education, or related field, and at least 2 years' experience as a Learning Specialist or similar.
  • Knowledge of and experience teaching learning strategies, preferably in higher education.
  • Knowledge of and experience with pedagogical educational materials, universal study strategies, protocols, computer software and alternative technologies.
  • Knowledge of cognitive and behavioral psychological approaches. Experience with assessment tools for evaluating students' learning needs.
  • Ability to supervise tutors and maintain student records.
  • Ability to write strategy handouts, literature for presentations, and other written items.
  • Good presentation skills.
  • 5+ years of experience as a Learning Specialist or similar.
  • Familiarity with medical education curriculum a plus.
  • Familiarity with Stanford, especially SoM, a plus.




EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE (REQUIRED):



Bachelor's degree and five years of relevant experience, or combination of education and relevant experience.



KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES (REQUIRED):


  • Advanced communication skills to clearly and effectively communicate information to internal and external audiences, client groups, and all levels of management.
  • Strong analytical and problem solving skills to review and analyze complex information.
  • Advanced computer skills, including experience with Microsoft Office Suite.
  • Advanced customer service skills.
  • Relevant computer systems/technology experience.
  • Understanding of financial transactions.
  • Ability to ensure and apply compliance with legal, financial, and university policies and external regulations

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS*:


  • Frequently sit, perform desk-based computer tasks.
  • Occasionally stand, walk, twist, use fine manipulation, grasp, use a telephone, write by hand, sort and file paperwork, lift, carry, push, and pull objects that weigh up to 10 pounds.
