Job Description:

The McAllister Lab is seeking a highly motivated senior lab technician to join our pioneering research efforts at the intersection of immunity, aging, patient diversity, and cancer. Our lab's research is focused on understanding how immune fitness impacts breast cancer progression and response to therapy. By improving our understanding of the cellular and molecular mechanisms involved in immune fitness in disease control, the McAllister Lab aims to develop innovative therapeutic treatments that benefit the diversity of patients with breast cancer. We are looking for a senior lab technician with a background in biological research, single cell analyses via flow cytometry, molecular techniques, and the ability to independently manage lab operations in a new and dynamic research environment. In this role, the individual will focus on lab operations with occasional experimental support of work using mouse models, molecular biology, and histology.


This position works very independently, and performs non-routine, highly specialized experimental procedures. The individual may participate in the design and modification of research protocols. The individual may also compose and present sections of research reports and manuscripts. This position performs advanced data analyses using advanced statistical techniques. This position also coordinates lab activities and undertakes quality assurance programs. Supervision of lab staff may be necessary.


This position is grant funded.


PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES


• Independently performs non-routine, highly specialized experimental procedures, such as performing cell culture, genomic DNA isolation from tissues and cells, qRT-PCR, and other cell biology and molecular biology experiments.


• Participates in the design and modification of research protocols, such as flow cytometry analyses.


• Develops research methodologies within the parameters of experimental protocols and research objectives.


• Composes and may present sections of research reports and manuscripts.


• Performs advanced data analyses using advanced statistical techniques.


• Responsible for the oversight and coordination of all lab activities, including quality assurance.


• Responsible for the oversight and coordination of the scheduling of all procedures.


• Responsible for troubleshooting problems and instructing others in highly specialized techniques.


• Responsible for laboratory upkeep and routine maintenance of equipment. Maintain laboratory supplies and equipment including chemicals, biological materials, cell stocks, etc.


• If entry level research staff is present, may be responsible for supervising staff in the lab and training new staff.


• In collaboration with Research Manager and/or PI, participates in budget and grant development and preparation.


• Assist writing, maintaining, and revision all institutional lab protocols.


• Maintain and generate all lab tissue banks and databases.


• Assist in maintaining and overseeing the mouse colony, including ordering.


• Assign and follow through with routine lab responsibilities assigned to lab personnel to ensure smooth daily operations.


• Work collaboratively with others in the lab to generate data for publications.


• Perform any additional duties or tasks as assigned by the PI or lab manager as needs arise.



Qualifications

QUALIFICATIONS


• Bachelor's degree in biology or related major required.


• 3-5 years of relevant laboratory experience required.


• Experience and comfortability with mouse handling, husbandry, and dissection.


• Experience running, troubleshooting, and planning flow cytometry experiments.


• Cell culture experience preferred.


SKILLS/ABILITIES/COMPETENCIES REQUIRED


• Good organizational skills, detail oriented


• Strong written and verbal communications skills.


• Sound degree of computer literacy


• Ability to methodically record data and to analyze data using basic statistics.


• Ability to demonstrate professionalism.


• Work independently after initial training with minimum supervision. Discusses progress of work regularly with supervisor.


• Analyze, visualize, and document experimental data in electronic laboratory notebooks in a timely and accurate manner.


• Oversee laboratory electronic notebook compliance
