College/Department Information


The Medical College of Georgia is one of the nation's largest medical schools by class size, with 260 students per class. The educational experience is anchored by the main campus in Augusta, regional clinical campuses for third- and fourth-year students across the state and a second four-year campus in Athens in partnership with the University of Georgia. MCG's expanding partnerships with physicians and hospitals across Georgia currently provides about 350 sites where students can experience the full spectrum of medicine, from complex care hospitals to small-town solo practices. MCG and its teaching hospitals also provide postgraduate education to more than 500 residents and fellows in 50 different Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education-approved programs. Our researchers and clinicians focus on what most impacts the health of Georgia's and America's children and adults, including cardiovascular biology and disease, cancer, neurosciences and behavioral sciences, public and preventive health, regenerative and reparative medicine, personalized medicine and genomics. Our physician faculty also share their expertise with physicians and patients at about 100 clinics and hospitals statewide.



Job Summary


The position requires the daily performance of complex chemical, biological and animal tissue preparation in the setting of a basic science research lab. In addition, the position will work with mouse, conduct the experiments and record the experimental results in the lab. The position will develop and evaluate new techniques and procedures and functions independently on small less complex projects. Depending on particular experiments, some work may be required in different core facilities and may require weekend work.


The incumbent will join a NIH-funded project (PI, Dr. Weiqin Chen). Studies are approached with a translational perspective and aim to address the mechanisms that regulate nutrient and energy metabolism, and how they become reprogrammed in obesity, lipodystrophy, and cardiometabolic diseases.



Responsibilities


Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:





  • Ensures proper care of animals being housed in animal facilities and handles rodents to prepare for experiments.

  • Participates in collection and preparation of animal tissues and primary cells.

  • Performs experiments and evaluates data collected.

  • Operates computer-based data analysis and spreadsheet programs.

  • Participates in preparation of media, stains and reagents.

  • Assists PI in design of experimental protocols.

  • Actively participates in lab meetings, which includes staying apprised of related scientific literature. Prepares manuscripts based on conclusions drawn from research efforts and pursues publishing as directed.

  • Calibrates, troubleshoots and makes minor repairs on laboratory equipment.

  • Perform all other job-related duties incidental to work described herein.





Required Qualifications


Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university in chemistry, biology, biochemistry, cell biology or other natural, life, health care or materials science directly related to the research area to which the position is assigned and experience in a research, basic science or clinical setting particularly clinical trials research.



OR



Associate's degree from an accredited college or university in chemistry, biology, biochemistry, cell biology or other natural, life, health care or materials science directly related to the research area to which the position is assigned and a minimum of three years' experience in a research, basic science or clinical setting particularly clinical trials research.



Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities


Ability to maintain confidentiality


Willingness and ability to work with research animals


Excellent interpersonal, written and verbal communication skills


Proficient in Microsoft Office and other computer software/database


Detail-oriented with strong multi-tasking, prioritization and organizational skills



Shift/Salary/Benefits



.50 FTE



Shift: Days; Monday - Friday


Pay Grade: R9


Salary Minimum: $15.00


Salary to be commensurate with qualifications of the selected candidate within the established range (generally minimum-midpoint) of the position
